The U.S., which became the first country to top 3,000 Olympic medals during the 2024 Summer Games, earned more medals in Paris than it did in Tokyo.
Athletes from the U.S. took home 126 total medals this year, topping China (91), Britain (65) and France (64).
China had been ahead in the race for gold throughout much of the games, but China and the U.S. both earned 40 apiece by the end of the games. In addition to 40 gold medals, the U.S. won 42 silver and 44 bronze medals.
While the U.S. won the most medals, it isn't home to this year's winningest athlete. China's Zhang Yufei won six medals: five bronze and one silver. France's Leon Marchand took home five wins for swimming: four gold and a bronze.
It's the most ever wins by the Americans in a non-boycotted Olympic Games outside the U.S., topping the previous high of 121 from Rio in 2016, according to the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC). The U.S. has twice surpassed their Paris winnings, both times at home. Team USA won 174 medals in Los Angeles in 1984 and won a whopping 239 medals in St. Louis in 1904.
The U.S. took home 39 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze medals for a total of 113 during the Tokyo Games. Team USA took home 121 Olympic medals in Rio in 2016.
According to USOPC, the U.S. has topped the medal chart since 1996. The U.S. took home 101 medals that year.

No Russians this year except a few in the unaffiliated country category. I don’t support them, but they should not have been excluded - that’s kind-of the point of the games.
I'm always surprised at how well Americans do in the Olympics, especially if you take away the stupid events, America would truly dominate. China was able to run up the gold medal count with such events.
It’s over?
I only saw the memes.
These numbers are meaningless without some element of common sizing.
The US sent 619 athletes, versus 398 from China, 342 from Britain, and 600 from France.
The metric of medals per athletes is 0.2 for the US, 0.23 for China, 0.19 for Britain, and 0.11 for France.
In this context, and across these four countries only, China is tops.
Do we get a pervert closing ceremony?
;-)
China did well in shooting — something to keep in mind if they come crawling over my back yard someday...
I have mixed feelings about all the foreign athletes who train (or play, as in basketball) here, then compete for their own countries. On the one hand, that seems unfair, but on the other, it often gives our college athletes tougher competition more often, which may be a good thing?
In many (all?) sports, you can’t go to the Games if you don’t qualify beforehand.
Lots of the track and swimmers from other countries are currently in US colleges.
Interesting article, esp. the part about China looking down on less than gold.

So, maybe that’s part of the reason China sends fewer athletes — it’s have a likely winner or don’t go, whereas in the US, etc., simply getting to the Olympics is quite a big deal and widely supported.
Pretty much agreed. Even at “2nd tier” US colleges one can find numerous foreign athletes these days.
Maybe we should have split value medals: If you live and train in a different country than you represent, both countries get half the medal in the countries’ count.
I agree with table tennis and badminton but diving and shooting aew not stupid events.
I found it kind of funny when she tried to run up on the heels of the competition, someone elbowed her in the ribs and she ended up way at the back of the pack.
more people play badminton & table tennis by orders of magnitude in the world than diving or shooting.
That, plus the US qualifies in many team sports while China does not (as one example). Basketball has 24 athletes who only are eligible to win two medals (men’s and women’s team). The men’s and women’s teams also qualified in water polo (28 athletes for two more medals) and rugby (not sure how many athletes there but at least 14 for two medals). That is at least 66 athletes who combined can only win 6 medals. That will necessarily drag down the medals per athlete measure
Whoop-de-doo
Well it was a bizarrely French closing ceremony-and then there was the hand off of the Olympic flag to LA. And Tom Cruise. And the LA28 (yes that is what it will be called) preview with Snoop Dogg🫤
The Russians should have been included. Was Germany there this Olympics? I heard zero about them, winning or losing.
At some point, it will be America’s turn to be punished by exclusion from the Olympics. A big percentage of our citizens will be howling like stuck hogs.
Some countries might say Israel should have been excluded, for daring to defend herself after Oct. 7th.
