Fear the beaver: How a gas station became a cult (and why you should consider joining)
The Blaze ^ | August 10, 2024 | Leon Wolf

Trying to explain Buc-ee's to someone who has never visited a Buc-ee's is like trying to explain to a fish what it's like to fly a helicopter: It's difficult to even know where to begin because you know that the person you're talking to has no frame of reference for such a thing even existing.

The problem, though, is that the fish thinks it knows what's going on, because occasionally it jumps a couple of feet out of the water. All you can do is shake your head sadly and say, "No. I mean, I get that you think you understand, but you don't. Maybe one day you'll be able to do it for yourself, and only then will you understand."

In the same way, when you talk to someone from the benighted areas of the country that do not yet have Buc-ee's, they think they know. After all, do they not have gas stations? Are there not Wawas or Sheetz where they live, and are they not basically the same thing?

The problem, to paraphrase Jules Winnfield, is that Wawa, Sheetz, and every other gas station on the planet are not in the same ballpark as Buc-ee's. Forget being in the same ballpark; they aren't in the same league or even the same sport. Saying that Buc-ee's is a gas station is a bit like saying that Disney World is a children's park. It's technically accurate, but the picture someone gets in his mind when you say "children's park" likely does not include the possibility that what you are discussing is anything remotely as as ostentatious or grandiose as Disney World.

Highly overrated. I'm a Sheetz fan and find the food way better than Buc-ees.

Not long after they opened in Leeds wife and I were in B’ham.
I told her we were going to Buc-ees. “What for” she said.
I told her, well I can’t explain it, you just gotta go.

When she is in town with her friends and someone hasn’t been she has to take her. And she answers them with the same thing I told her. “Well, I can’t explain it. You just gotta go”.

Having said that, It’ really is a red-neck heaven. Which is not a bad thing! Also, 110 gas pumps! I swear, last time I was there I drove through the pumps twice and couldn’t fill up. So, I just went in, browsed through the merch (300 dollar cowboy hats!), bought a brisket sandwich and a bottle of wine, and headed across the road for gas.

We’re SUPPOSED to be getting one at one of the exits off I-75 here in Marion County Florida. Seems like it’s taking a long time to get here.

100%. We don’t have one near us but whenever we travel we map out any Buc-cees on the route. A stop means a very CLEAN private toilet, a delicious lunch and cheap gas all in one.

Praise Beaver!

Buc-ees was my favorite go to place while driving through Texas. 100 gas pumps, a store which looks like HEB and Cabellas had two children; one named BBQ and the other they fondly called Jerky.

And everyone is friendly. And know why they pay their lowest staff member over 20 backs an hour? Because they have great product, which is fast to deliver and reliable. No one receives tips and their training makes them competent. A trait which will go a long way when the staff start taking on other jobs as they get older.

110 gas pumps!

In Leeds, AL, I gassed up at pump #260 (there were another 4 with higher numbers but were for Diesel cars (no big rigs allowed). Katy, TX has just as many.

I remember seeing a Buc-ee’s on the Food Network or some such at my mom’s years ago after we had driven eight hours and 400 miles with scary gas stations along the way thinking “ Oh, if only...” The one on the AL coast was a complete surprise and a blessing when they built it on that route!

The first Buc-ees outside of Texas was built in south Alabama close to our vacation home. It is definitely redneck heaven. You can’t explain it, you have to see it. Packed during beach season but not too bad the rest of the year. Fixin to move down there permanently so will be visiting it more.

No 18 Wheelers allowed at Buc-ees, but the big ass Campers hauling cars and stuff are just as bad. The worst thing about Buc-ees is the low life’s park their cars at the gas pumps and go in to shop just leaving the car there instead of moving into a parking spot. People can really suck.

That said, I think one must go to Buc-ees once in a lifetime just for the Buc-ees Overbites. A giant hockey puck sized Reese’s Cup that puts Reese’s to shame. They come in Milk and Dark Chocolate and are to die for, and they may well kill ya they are so bad for ya. But we only live once. Plus the Jerkey was outrageous at $30 a pound. They also have like 30 different flavors of fudge, Oh and the chopped brisket BBQ Sandwich is the bomb.

Go if ya can, once at least.

Can’t say I’ve ever been to one. I go through town and note the gas prices so when leaving I know where to fill up. Haven’t been inside a $$$$ convenience store in years.

No thanks to over priced snacks and souvenirs. There’s been 2 bottles of Walmart coke on the kitchen counter since March and may stay there until next March unless they are drunk so they don’t expire. If we want potato chips, I’ll slice some ‘taters and fry ‘em up. Homemade 25 cents vs. $5 at the grocery store vs. whatever double that at the gas station. My closet definitely does not need a beaver t-shirt.

The pulled pork sandwiches are great. Chopped Brisket is a close second.

Dagnabit! Ocala has it all: 7-11's, Wawa's and now Buc-ees!?

Meanwhile, out here in the west Marion sticks and hollers (between Dunnellon and Ocala) we just got interent (not that $120/mo X satellite stuff. $45/mo Verizon!), but still, no Wawa. And I'll probably be dead and gone when (if?) we ever get a decent gas station!

(rant over. Carry on).
