Olympic swimmers may have found a possible cure to beating the E. coli-riddled Seine River that has been one of the huge storylines at the 2024 Paris Olympics — a can of Coca-Cola.
Several world-class athletes swear that the sugary soda has helped them stave off bacteria and any infection they could get from competing in the open waters.
“There’s no harm in drinking a Coke after a race,” New Zealand’s Ainsley Thorpe told the Wall Street Journal after the Women’s Triathlon last week. “If you Google it, it says it can help.”
Doctors say there is no medical backing to Coke being a gastroenterological cure-all, but many athletes are still taking advice from the professionals around them in Paris.
“The myth of Coca-Cola is true,” Australian marathon swimmer Moesha Johnson said. “We will often have a Coca-Cola afterwards just to try to flush out anything inside of us.”
The Olympians have also been taking cocktails of probiotics before and after their races to combat the polluted river in Paris.
“I took pro-biotics, I drank my Yakult, I couldn’t do more,” Beligium triathlete Jolien Vermeylen said after her race on July 31. “I had the idea of not drinking water, but yes, it failed.”
Ironically enough, Vermeylen said the Seine “doesn’t taste like Coca-Cola or Sprite, of course.”

Our house used to use Coke syrup for tummy troubles.

Moms used 7 Up and crackers in the distant past.
Regardless of whether they really do anything scientifically or not, I do believe that a lot of effective home remedies have to do with the convincing ceremony and the fact that mom is treating you.

Well, right, and a tincture of time helps too.
A home remedy for an upset stomach has always been Coke syrup. The pharmacy where I worked in the 60s kept some in stock. Whether or not it kills bacteria is another story.
But Coca Cola was great removing rust so you could tell the serial number on your bike.
Yup, fizzy drink of coke or ginger-ale. I think the carbonation did the trick. Now that I’m old that stuff is like molten lava going down my throat
Yep, remember doing that, too, now that you mention it. Carbonic acid from the CO2 would react with the sulfites and wash them away.
Ginger Ale works much better than Coke.
“Rum should work great then“
Once in the early stages of a cold I had one of those sore throats that hurt like hell even when I just breathed. Broke out the Barcardi 151 and gargled with it. Worked almost instantly.
There was a long editorial-type story in the NY Post about the pollution of the Seine on July 21. The conclusion was that the germs usually win.
Back when people were working on their own cars, they used to use Coke to de-grease the engine block.
When my sister was around 3 years old and came down with uncontrollable diarrhea and vomiting, my mom and dad we’re frustrated with the doctors recommending the usual remedies that had no effect. Our neighbor was a doctor so my mom asked him what to do. He advised her to go get a jug of of raw coca cola syrup give it to her. It worked like magic. After that, up until the time I was a teenager, we always had a jug on hand.
That was back in the early 60’s. All you had to do was go to the local business that had a soda fountain and you could buy a gallon jug from behind the counter.
Coke syrup cured many an upset stomach in my home as well.
I should add that it also works to stop the scours in young calves.
Way back when, my Triumph Bonneville’s motor seized up due to corrosion from excessive moisture, the mechanic tried all the standard lubricant based treatments to free it up and they all failed. So he poured half a can of Coke in each cylinder and waited 24 hours or so, and the cylinders miraculously broke free. So I am a total believer in the magic healing properties of Coca Cola.
We used to buy Coke syrup at the drug store to fight nausea when sick. Pour it over ice and it calmed the stomach real well.
I’ve been a Coke drinker since I was 13. Pretty much addicted to it, I think. I don’t know why I’m still alive and healthy, even though several people in my life have told me I’m killing myself. 😮 (I must have built up an immunity to it.)
Oh, but we have vaccines!! And 24 boosters!
