The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
I miss fishing, or even just being out on the water. I wish Beau and I could find time to fish more.
Have a LOVELY Sunday! :)
Haven’t you heard? We are supposed to get 10 flights of stairs in every day, besides the 10,000 steps.
Full disclosure: We turned an unused upstairs closet into a pantry. I like it better than a pantry in the basement.
Note to self: I gotta start cleaning up and reorganizing the basement. Soon. It’s been a hodge podge for far too long.
It’s always nice to get a visit in with the kids, isn’t it? It’s nice when we like their chosen mates, too. I have no doubt his girlfriend will learn to cook eventually.
Our son and grandson will be here for a few days next week, so getting ready for that.
I’ve got an under the stairs pantry too. Plus an overflow metal shelf unit too.
Looking forward to the pictures.
Yeah, I have a few MAJOR projects I want to get accomplished this summer and organizing canning supplies is a BIG one. I have a lovely pantry right off the Dining Room that is enclosed and under the stairs that lead to the upstairs Library and bedrooms. I LOVE it, but keeping it organized seems to be a never-ending problem!
It has sturdy shelving and pretty much a place for everything, but I need to do a BIG clear out of EVERY hidey-hole in this house and get it together!
The closet in the Library holds sewing supplies and fabric and Christmas wrap and the like; a lot of that can probably go.
Keep me accountable, Ladies! I AM inspired now! Would rather water/weed/pick veggies in the wee morning hours before the heat, THEN work on this project.
I think the first thing I should do is go through the upper cupboards in the main Pantry and get rid of stuff. That would free up some room to move other stuff that is needed but rarely used into those upper cupboards.
Just thinking out loud here, but thanks! ;)
Truthfully, we have more room than we need here, and I end up filling every space with sentimental items. Mom passed several years ago, and I seem to keep inheriting pieces of hers that I think are still useful. The truth is, I need to downsize on my own stuff, but it’s hard to pass up things that remind me of her.
We’ve been cleaning up in our guest rooms this weekend. Yes, you read that right. We have two unused bedrooms that we manage to keep messy until guests come (our kids, and sometimes old friends who pass through on their travels). We are a free hotel. Oh wait, we provide bed, breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, AND creative activities or outings. We adapt to our overnight guests’ schedules. Thankfully, this only happens three or four times a year, just enough to keep our rooms from exploding.
Anything I can do to help you brainstorm or keep you enthused, I’m your gal. Good luck and best wishes in your endeavors!
I hear you. I am clearing out a lot of stuff. Trouble is we have lots hubby does not want to get rid of. I do some on the QT.
After I got sick of full sun work, I went into clean up mode yesterday. General chores plus working on the overstuffed foyer. Got a freezer out there I need to fix but it’s become a catchall shelf. Got a newer side by side fridge to replace the little cheapo model we have in here but the foyer walkway has become to narrow to get it through due to clutter.
This cheapo fridge is variable. Put something on the bottom shelf or near the back and it will freeze. If I turn the temp up, things will go bad in the warm spots. Accidentally froze a quart of shishito peppers a couple of days ago. Time for it to go.
Said I’d be out there working on the tunnel by 6am but I woke up sore. Heading out now at 7am, still sore.
“I do some on the QT.”
That’s what I use ‘Bear Camp’ for, LOL! I seriously have nightmares about having to clean out this house, his basement workshop (Little Shop of Horrors!) BARN, other outbuildings, give away all the hunting dogs (I’m keeping the mule!) if it’s all left up to me. Ugh! We’ve had this conversation many times - but he’s a FARMER first and every nut, bolt, hammer and nail MIGHT be needed some day. ;)
I guess clearing out the animals, lighting a fire and running are probably not options? ;)
But, I’ve got to get a handle on my own stuff. And I am probably one of the LEAST sentimental women you’ll ever meet, though I do keep greeting and Christmas cards from a select few in my life.
For some reason the overflow of canning jars this time of year always triggers me!
Thanks for the encouragement, FF. We can keep each other in line. :)
So, it’s a wrap; we ALL have too much stuff! ;)
Mom is already having us girls decide what we want of hers. So far ALL I am inheriting is a pair of earrings, an American Eagle statue and matching piece of framed artwork and a large ‘Carnival Glass’ vase that’s been in the family since some random Uncle won it at the State Fair. ;)
She is STILL cleaning out her deceased husband’s ‘stuff’ SEVEN years later! She keeps giving US stuff though I keep telling here that the Goodwill is TWO BLOCKS from her house - and they have a drive-through!
*shrugs* worth a try?
Good luck with that. I received the stuff I wanted six or seven years ago, but there was a lot of stuff “unclaimed” by any of us, so that has been dribbling in the rest of the time. We have virtual calls since I’m so far away, and decide what is to be sent to goodwill, what is thrown out, and what is kept. There’s always some little trinket that I think I’ll find a spot for. So yeah, being sentimental really is my weak spot. Somehow, I manage to figure out a new home for the here and their arrivals.
Thanks! Great use of space. I have the space, I just have too much stuff! I need to PRIORITIZE what to keep and what to donate.
You know, in both the Army and Retail Management I could keep 15 balls in the air at all times, no problem! Now that I have ‘all day to do it’ nothing seems to get done, LOL!
My problem is I can’t get rid of the old man’s stuff because that’s my stuff. Yes, I have a tote full of electrical/electronics cords though I have whittled it down a bit. I used to have a tote plus a couple of shoe boxes.
Got a bunch of books from homeschooling the kids that I need to get rid of. I have a half a dozen old laptops that are outdated. Ebay to the rescue.
That’ll free up an 8 foot section of wall and I plan to build a cabinet to store stuff in. Need to get an attic hatch door so I can put a few things up there.
Longitudinal tunnel braces are done. Hoisting and lashing off the 40 foot pipes up underneath the arches and drilling upwards from a ladder that should be 2 foot taller is slow going. And I’m sore and will probably be more-so tomorrow.
Much sturdier with the truss frames all attached together. Still need some diagonal bracing which I’m doing with small cable aka wire rope in an X shape. I saw where I’ll attach it today while cooling off in the truck. Will be super easy.
I might try screwing a piece of wiggle wire track on a tunnel end arch today once it gets shady. I don’t know if I can bend it as I go, levering on the screws, or if I’ll need to bend an arch on the tracks first using a bending jig, that I’d have to make.
At any rate, top plastic is going on next weekend. Supposed to cool down too.
I’m beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel;~)
Upper end walls with gable vents and plastic next. Then end doors and drop down sides which there’s no rush on because it won’t need to be closed up until Oct/Nov. Might want shade cloth before that.
Gonna get some cattle panels to exclude the goats so I can start some Fall/Winter crops. Just enough to attach to the tunnel. I have stuff to build a fence around the tunnel and some area for outdoor crops. Just waiting on cool weather.
“I’m beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel ;~)”
LOL! Hoping it’s not an oncoming train! ;)
I’ve been canning V-8 juice all day. As soon as I have enough ripe tomatoes I’ll be doing it again. My right arm hurts from chopping veggies!
I’m PRAYING for some rain to motivate me to do a total clear-out and de-clutter of the ‘Prepper Pantry’ which is what I’m going to be calling it from now on.
Name it. Frame it. Tame it! :)
Watched a few videos at lunchtime. One woman stores all of her ‘empty’ quart-sized canning jars capped and filled with water! She figures she’s going to be storing them anyway, may as well have a water stash in them in case of emergency. Then she uses that water to water plants or drink if need be or fill canning pots when she water-bath cans.
Kinda smart - I can’t think of a down-side. If you have sturdy shelving, they’re as heavy as they would be if filled with food, anyway.
Anyhow, gathering ideas and letting my ‘reptile brain’ sort things out for later. ;)
I fill old gallon milk jugs with water from the garden hose for watering my indoor plants during the winter. I refill on days when it’s above freezing and hopefully there’s some sun. In an emergency, I would probably drink it. I sanitize each of them periodically. I have about 12 gallons stored at any given time. It might be enough to get you through a rough patch if needed.
In our old house we built book shelves under the stairs. Things weren’t hidden, but it was a great place for bins.
In this house, our kitchen pantry is built underneath the stairs that goes to the bedrooms upstairs, with accordion doors. Underneath the stairs to the basement is a nice closet area where we store the Christmas tree and some other odd things we want to keep. Gotta make use of every square foot.
I also need to get rid of clutter ala Marie Kondo. A work in progress for me always.
