My wife's Windows 11 laptop is in an infinite loop trying to install an update that fails to install then immediately tries to install it again. This slows the laptop of so much that it is unusable.
Below is a screenshot of the update screen displaying the offending optional update.

I have searched and searched the Interwebs to find out how to make an update stop trying to install but have had no luck.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

My wife’s embroidery software only runs on Windows. I bought the laptop specifically for her embroidery apps.

Did you try the System Restore method outlined above?
It's what I do when a Windows 11 update messes up my system - 4-5 times in the last 6 months.

In order for “system restore” to work you have have created a restore point, which I have not.
It is not turned on automatically.

Did you check in the System Restore option?
I believe that the system DOES create a default Restore point when there's a Windows update.

Next option: Safe Mode
Have you tried that?
You may be able to navigate around in the file system and try some of the options others have posted above. I'm not a fan of willy-nilly deleting stuff, though.

I just noticed that the Advanced Options has an "Uninstall Updates" option.
I've never used that - did you explore that option?

The update downloads, starts to install and fails. Then it shows up again and tries to install again. And I do have auto updates turned off. This is a preview update which is optional, but it tries to install anyway. I have found a tool that blocks specific updates but it is not a Microsoft tool so I presume it is malware and will not be using it.

I may have to take the macOS plunge soon. My Windows machine runs Android Studio, but not Xcode. I’m thinking about acquiring a Mac mini.

Google this to see if you come up with anything useful:
2024-07 cumulative update for windows 11 preview 23-H2 KB5040527
There appears to be much complaining in the first couple of pages of results. There are some Youtube solutions.

Before you try anything else, boot the PC into safe mode to let windows reset its pointers and reload the drivers.
When in safe mode, see if you can turn off automatic updates.
Then restart the computer again.
