The questions behind the Ozempic baby boom
Financial Times ^ | 7/16/2024 | Anjana Ahuja

Women taking the anti-diabetes medication Ozempic might have an extra reason to pat their tummies. Not only does the injectable drug lead to weight loss, a finding that has sparked frenzied off-label demand worldwide, but in recent months it has also been linked to a surprise baby boom.

Now scientists are trying to unpick the mechanism behind the “Ozempic babies” phenomenon, which has been reported by users of similar medications, too. This matters: the drugs were never tested for use by women who were pregnant or trying to conceive, and animal studies on Ozempic’s key ingredient, semaglutide, suggest an association with birth defects.

C’mon. Don’t you want to get into that hot pink bikini again?

It shrinks your stomach to the size of a walnut and you will vomit if you overload. Never puked that hard in my life.

I don’t believe those alleged before and after pictures.

Anyone losing that much weight is going to have saggy skin. Skin gets stretched out with that much fat and takes time (if young enough I suppose) and/or surgery to deal with it.

You can always tell when someone has lost a lot of weight. And they do NOT look like that *after* picture.

Yeah, I don’t have much faith in before and after photos. Just suggesting a possible answer to the mystery of why the patients are getting pregnant. It reminds of the wave of heart attacks in older men after Viagra. Not really a big mystery at all.

It’s just a random before and after photo. The point was that more sex equals more pregnancies.

Which one of your ignorant friends told you that?

well... when you are not a fat pig, men are more likely to want to have sex with you.

This is not rocket science.

Meth users aren’t the only people looking for a quick fix.

I don’t trust pharmaceuticals. I’m trying to stay fit and healthy the old fashioned way, with daily exercise, and eating good foods. Meals from scratch are the norm in this household. Very little junk food.

This isn’t about a lack of sexual activity. A colleague whose wife was maybe 40 lbs overweight (i.e. not morbidly obese) had basically daily scheduled whoopie for months upon months without success. The eggs are simply lower quality as a result of the woman being overweight. Last I heard, they signed up for IVF, but the little woman was in her early 40s, so that was probably pretty marginal. Still, at 12K a year, if Ozempic works, it’s way less than the $50K I’ve heard for IVF. And if it can be combined with IVF, that’s a store of embryos for when the woman’s fertility tails off.

A man's sperm increases in quality when the woman he is banging is "hawt."

There, I said it!

The drug works by paralyzing the stomach. No thanks.

That's not even remotely true.

This isn't even remotely true either. Where do people come up with such BS?

Time will tell. There have already been many lawsuits and a big class action one is being put together.

You watch, one day you will be seeing constant commercials from law firms saying, “Did you or a loved one take Ozempic...”

There are many articles of problems people have had and warnings from many doctors. I find that most people that are in denial about all of this are taking it, or know someone that is, so they’re biased and refuse to investigate further.
