Explanation: What's happening above Uluru? A United Nations World Heritage Site, Uluru is an extraordinary 350-meter high mountain in central Australia that rises sharply from nearly flat surroundings. Composed of sandstone, Uluru has slowly formed over the past 300 million years as softer rock eroded away. The Uluru region has been a home to humans for over 22,000 years. Recorded last month, the starry sky above Uluru includes the central band of our Milky Way galaxy, complete with complex dark filaments of dust, bright red emission nebulas, and billions of stars.

What’s wrong with calling it what the Aboriginal people do?

What’s wrong with calling it what we call it?

Of course there’s nothing wrong with either, just preference. But the Western names are generally easier to remember.

Oh yeah, I suck at woke.

Great picture, btw. Could you add me to the ping list? I often fail to catch the posts.

I’m sure Native Americans had a name for the area where I live.

I don’t care.

PS: Why did the aboriginals name it after a Lt. from Star Trek?

Well, the Aboriginals knew Uluru first, it has significance for them that it doesn’t for the Australians, and they OWN it...again.

I guess you missed that time travel episode where the aboriginals were so impressed with her that they named the rock after their best understanding of her name.

I’ve always been fascinated by Uluru. If I had a bucket list, visiting Uluru would definitely be on it.

Good pick-up on the “Gee” - perhaps a bit less so on the name joke. Uhura and Uluru might be easily confused by people just superficially looking at the names.

Well, if you’re not in a joking mood right now, I’ll leave it at that. πŸ˜€
