Patty Hearst - innocent or guilty?

Posted on 07/27/2024 2:55:48 PM PDT by Krosan

What do you guys think? Was she a willing terrorist or a traumatized teenager with a Stockholm syndrome?

I don't know too much about that case and was leaning toward the first, but today I read a description:

Meanwhile, the SLA was indoctrinating Hearst and raping her repeatedly. Then the SLA offered her a choice: to join them, or be released.

Let me ask you a question: in the shoes of 19-year-old Patty Hearst, how much would you trust the assurances of Donald DeFreeze and the SLA? That’s exactly how much Hearst trusted them when they said they’d let her go. So she said of course she’d join them. Hearst famously robbed a bank with the SLA and went on the run with them. The account I’ve given of her decision is hers, which I believe.

She was a rich girl who knew it didn’t matter anyway. She could rely on the old man’s money.

So blame the victim. Why? Maybe envy?

You have it exactly right. As you often do.

The victim's name was Myrna Opsahl.

Nurse. Wife. Mother of four children. At the bank to deposit money for the church of which she was an active member.

Funny how no one on this thread seems to care about her.

Guess she was not pretty enough or something.

After the death of DeFreeze she could have escaped from the remaining SLAers easily. She chose not to.

OTOH, the FBI agent who finally caught her believed she was a victim of Stockholm.

Do you believe she wanted to be kidnapped and raped also to achieve this goal you think she had? I am old enough to remember this event well. So I must ask how were you involved more so than me to have “ lived through it “ and have such a bold opinion of her thoughts and feeling?

I watched it as it unfolded and I believe she’s guilty as hell and was part of the whole scheme. She denounced her family and joined the SLA and changed her name.

I don’t need a lecture from you. The post was a simple guilty or not. I said guilty.

Elizabeth Smart was a case where I believed the victim.

Patty Hearst no F’n way.

I am very much on the fence on this. At 19 I did and leaned towards things which absolutely make me cringe today. Horrify me actually how and why my mind and life went in that direction. I’m guessing it may be same for Patty.

I think she did what she had to do. What happened to her was pretty horrible then she went to jail.

I got it from Wikipedia so it's got to be true.   I mean it was truly on Wikipedia, the Donald DeFreeze article.

I remember when Sean Penn and Madonna got divorced. There was a wild rumor that persisted for decades how they fought and he tied her to a chair so she couldn’t go out without him on New Year’s Eve. It made headlines around the globe. Only this year I read an interview where he was lamenting the worst thing about being famous was dealing with the outright lies in the media because it can affect you for the rest of your life. He actually mentioned the chair story as one that has haunted him, caused further false stories he was abusive to women, and it is completely false. Juuuuust saying.

Thanks for touching base. Wikipedia is great for stone-cold facts, like for example the year Frederick the Great born. But for everything else, eh, not so much.

And that’s because Wikipedia can be edited by literally anyone. So all sorts of crazy stuff can sneak through. I myself have edited a few Wikipedia articles. I stick to the facts, of course.

One article I corrected was the Wikipedia biography of the computer pioneer, Grace Hopper. Some clown posted there that Hopper was a WW1 flying ace. That was complete nonsense, and I corrected it.

But who knows what nonsense still remains on that site.

I did not know about the prison visit. That is quite something.

If there are no prison visitor logs to prove this assertion then it’s a bogus claim.

I have a hard time believing investigators didn’t check the prison visitor logs looking for leads to associates back then and missed it.

It would have been huge news and used in her trial.

If it was true that she viited DeFreeze in prison a year before kidnapping then that would push me into solid guilty.

Of course wikipedia can’t be trusted so I can’t be that sure.

All this bracelet stuff isn’t convincing for me.

I read about this somewhere, Stockholm Syndrome and Hearst, but wasn’t her kidnapping subsequent to that of John Paul (?) Getty, who had his ear cut off by kidnappers? That would have been enough to make her compliant.

I don’t need a lecture from you.

I didn't lecture you.

I also watched it, and under duress women especially are more susceptible to caving to the demands of their captors for self preservation. We have no clue as to what she was actually subjected to.

I saw no evidence that proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that she did what she did willingly without coercion. The fact that she was kidnaped shows that the likelihood of coercion was extremely possible & probable.

They determined that her IQ dropped from 130 to about 112, and she lost considerable body weight also.

But as I said, I hope you never face what she faced.

Her defense was that she was repeatedly raped, threatened with death and brainwashed.

It might be a lie, but if it were true then I would not hold a 19 year old girl responsible.

The question for me is - was it true that she visited DeFreeze in prison one year before the kidnapping.
