Phones are supported well beyond their average ownership lifetime. In stark contrast, automakers are struggling to work out how long their “smartphones on wheels” can be kept on the road.
In 2022, the automaker told drivers of the affected cars, some only three years old, that a technical solution was delayed by the pandemic. Now, more than two years later, those drivers still don’t have access to telematics services.
A recent report found that cars and trucks just reached a new record average age of 12.6 years, up two months from 2023.
“Whatever anybody is saying right now, it will really have to be proven out in time,” says Stacey Higginbotham, a policy fellow at Consumer Reports.

Gone are the days of topping off a system.
Easy to kill system and more so at low temperatures.
It is recommended to do it by weight.

I’m certain there are a few wizards that can usually do heat pumps with gauges.
A few that have legitimate workarounds. Very few.
It will take a generation to develop a good crop of heat pump techs.
And still many slop artists.
My neighbor had a new AC installed, not a HP, as I was working in my yard...Wow, they were fast!
I saw him attach the vacuum pump and a few minutes later he was charging the system.
It needs to be a deep vacuum <500 microns and held for a minimum of 30 minutes to remove all moisture and leak check.
They were back before the end of summer to find a small leak and refill. They left the vacuum on overnight.
I got raised in Wisconsin with winters that hovered around 20-30 BELOW ZERO.

Wife’s Volvo can’t be used for 90 minutes nutes during SW updates. Doors have to be locked as well.

The big car manufacturers and government stooges work together to keep cars expensive .
Simpler,reliable vehicles that are easily repaired and made to last decades are not profitable for the industry.
Planned obsolescence and yearly styling changes with advertising that works on the emotions keep the dollars flowing.
There is no GOOD reason for cars to need computerized everything .

There is a reason I’m still driving an 02 350,000 miles work truck every day. Rolling computers is word for word what I’ve been calling new vehicles. Beyond that they also have : and 5 thousand dollar headlights and tail lights and certain once simple simple repairs that also run up to five figures (the air director in the HVAC system). When my timing chain starts making noise I’ll either just fix it or drop in a new engine. Probably gonna put a new bed on it soon.

Early to mid 2000s is about right. They all had OBDII down by that point yet hadn’t gotten to the point of having a PC in the car. The lower end cars and trucks don’t connect to the web or have GPS.
I wouldn’t want another old truck with a V8 and carb. I can’t afford 8 mpg. I like 18 mpg and quick morning startups in all weather.

I am consistently surprised by how much false information still circulates out in the field, and one of the ones I hear often is the idea that you cannot or should not “top-off” or recharge R410a systems on top of an existing charge of R410a when the system is low.

My 2019 V8 has 750 hp. On a level road I get 27 mpg on cruise control!
Town/suburban is 14-16 and I don’t have a light foot. Of course, it does go lower with “spirited” driving.

Cars today are more reliable than ever! Once a high mileage car was one with 50k miles on it. Now we say Toyotas with 100k are just getting broken!

As long as your Ford collection does not include the outer section of one of the infamous Ford 2-piece spark plugs from the Triton engine, you are doing well.
We had an Expedition, and when the miles went up we gave it to our son...
He called and asked if I had replaced the plugs.
I said to bring it over with a new set of plugs and we’ll do it after dinner.
Not this one he said and you best ask around about it first.
We proceeded slowly and took our time, all day but it worked OK. Many reports of the NEW plugs blowing out of the head!
They only made about three turns finger-tight and not much more with the torque wrench.
A friend had the spark plug extractor tap on hand if the top half of the plug separated from the lower section...

True. And with new cars, after the software kinks are worked out, how long will they need updates? Particularly for computers that aren’t connected to the internet (and thus susceptible to viruses)? After the 10th year (when the warranty expires), shouldn’t all the bugs be fixed anyway?
