Phones are supported well beyond their average ownership lifetime. In stark contrast, automakers are struggling to work out how long their “smartphones on wheels” can be kept on the road.
In 2022, the automaker told drivers of the affected cars, some only three years old, that a technical solution was delayed by the pandemic. Now, more than two years later, those drivers still don’t have access to telematics services.
A recent report found that cars and trucks just reached a new record average age of 12.6 years, up two months from 2023.
“Whatever anybody is saying right now, it will really have to be proven out in time,” says Stacey Higginbotham, a policy fellow at Consumer Reports.

Guessing that there is a serious shortage that is qualified work on the rolling computers. Same for heat pumps.
Good question. My 2023 Silverado has 10 year warranty so I’m likely good through that but what about afterwards. Will they start charging for updates? Will they even offer them or focus on trade-ins?
One day you’ll get an update and your car WILL NOT FUNCTION any longer.
Well it looks like they have planned to prevent a Cuba model. Where everyone just hangs on to their ice cars and tell the EV nazis to go f themselves.
This is why I drive around in a 2000 Volvo wagon.
I hope it runs forever.
We need a car company that manufactures cars with old style plugs, points and distributors. And maybe one that can retrofit new autos with some of that old time tech. No computers or anything made after the 60s.
Yep auto insurance essentially stole my damaged 2016 Honda from me after accident. Took me awhile to find older car in good shape. I drive the car; I don’t want a car that drives me- and if idjits driving around me aren’t on their phone texting they’re too busy trying to figure out how to program something or find radio station on cars computer!! (Too complicated!!)
Generally speaking you don’t want updates.
How good is that update going to feel when BMW decides that heated seats are now a subscription feature?
A major reason why my 9 year old car will be kept running till my last day.
Cars suck and they have sucked since 1972.

ROTFLMAO!
Friend has a VW Tiguan. Had to replace the battery, ok, $200. But replacing the battery locks up the computer. $750 to reboot it.
Totally forget the points thing.
Dedicated electronic ignition is WAY better [Ford TFI modules excepted.].
Coil on plug remains very questionable.
Integrated cyl by cyl misfire detection is not a bad thing.

They paid you for your damages. You could have bought it back if you thought they were “stealing” it.
“Same for heat pumps.”
They are putting heat pumps on EV’s because they are more efficient than resistive heaters.
“Cars suck and they have sucked since 1972.”
Cars are more powerful, quieter, ride better, safer and more dependable than those pre-1972 models.
My Forester requires a specific battery due to the technology.
It will depend on your social credit score before we’re through.
Do you want remote start? Buy a subscription.
Do you want seat warmers? Buy a subscription.
Do you want AM radio? Buy a subscription.

“But replacing the battery locks up the computer. $750 to reboot it.”
It doesn’t lock up the computer. Battery info has to be entered into ECU. Five minutes. No way $750.
