Guessing that there is a serious shortage that is qualified work on the rolling computers. Same for heat pumps.
Good question. My 2023 Silverado has 10 year warranty so I’m likely good through that but what about afterwards. Will they start charging for updates? Will they even offer them or focus on trade-ins?
One day you’ll get an update and your car WILL NOT FUNCTION any longer.
Well it looks like they have planned to prevent a Cuba model. Where everyone just hangs on to their ice cars and tell the EV nazis to go f themselves.
This is why I drive around in a 2000 Volvo wagon.
I hope it runs forever.
Generally speaking you don’t want updates.
How good is that update going to feel when BMW decides that heated seats are now a subscription feature?
A major reason why my 9 year old car will be kept running till my last day.
Cars suck and they have sucked since 1972.
Friend has a VW Tiguan. Had to replace the battery, ok, $200. But replacing the battery locks up the computer. $750 to reboot it.
“Same for heat pumps.”
They are putting heat pumps on EV’s because they are more efficient than resistive heaters.
It will depend on your social credit score before we’re through.
Do you want remote start? Buy a subscription.
Do you want seat warmers? Buy a subscription.
Do you want AM radio? Buy a subscription.

The SUV we bought has a user manual about 500 pages long because of its computer. How ridiculous.
More important, will your car just lock up during the update?
I’m thinking computers will be in your clothes eventually. Wearing your clothes means wearing your computer.
Wife’s Volvo can’t be used for 90 minutes nutes during SW updates. Doors have to be locked as well.
I thought about starting a company called Techless where you bring your car in and we remove all computers. You’re left with a low tech fuel injected engine and a radio.
There is a reason I’m still driving an 02 350,000 miles work truck every day. Rolling computers is word for word what I’ve been calling new vehicles. Beyond that they also have : and 5 thousand dollar headlights and tail lights and certain once simple simple repairs that also run up to five figures (the air director in the HVAC system). When my timing chain starts making noise I’ll either just fix it or drop in a new engine. Probably gonna put a new bed on it soon.
Here’s hoping CROWDSTRIKE isn’t managing their updates.
But if you’re really into disaster porn 7/18 would have been even more of a glorious mess if they were.
He had, for decades, intentionally sought, bought, and stored new parts for old refigerators, Frigidaire handles, Kelvinator condensors, you name it. Converted his basement and had a simple catalog system. He was wealthy as all get out and worked for fun.
There will be a market within 10 years for new EEC's for 2000-2010s that will be a fortune to be had, due to market pressure by 2035 for ever-reducing numbers of ICE units. Cheaper than buying ICEs and storing them; and a much tighter market due to lack of inventory.
just bought a 60’s car for this, among many similar concerns.
No gps
No tracking
No computers on board
No government surveillance devices
No apps required
No backup cam
No lane warning mirrors
No black box
Need a whole new engine? $6k and swap it myself.
It won’t go down in value compared to the functional obsolescence built into today’s vehicles and it’s a BLAST to drive.
Worth considering
If they were built right in the first place, they wouldn’t need updates.
