The Most Common Recurring Dreams — and What They Mean
Better Report ^ | 07/23/2024

Dreams are absurd and unpredictable. However, while we each have our unique dream experiences, there’s a lot of commonality in what we dream about. Many of us share the same feelings of desire, nostalgia, and stress that are often the root cause of so many dreams — but why do we often get the same dream repeatedly? Here are the most common recurring dreams and what they might mean.

Being Chased

More than 50% of people experience these unpleasant dreams. Being chased in a dream may mean you’re avoiding something important in real life, or that you’re refusing to accept something you disagree with. If you’re the one doing the chasing, it may mean you feel like you’re falling behind in life and need to catch up.

I will sometimes start dreaming the moment my head hits the pillow and I’m in a halfway wake states. Often I end up dreaming, during that state, of the creepiest and crawliest insects or reptiles you can imagine eating each other.

I had a dream like that, or I thought it was a dream, in that space of time between being awake and being asleep. I was camping in Jordan, and I looked up on the top of the tent to see a camel spider. I remember thinking: I hope that spider is on the outside of the tent, where is that cat when I need it, and I must be dreaming that spider. I rolled over and went back to sleep. Later my daughter told me that I didn't dream that spider, that she had seen it too.

I have recurring dreams of traveling somewhere or trying to travel somewhere and encountering problems.....

++++++++++

I very frequently have similar dreams as yours. They all involve a time crunch (flight departure, important appointment) and I encounter numerous hinderances trying to be present at the appropriate time and place. Flat tires, Car problems, weather, etc. All things that distract me from achieving the task at hand.

That actually happened to me in about 1962. Winter. Had a 1950 something British Morris Oxford. Junk. Approaching a red light at low speed, brake pedal went to floor with no braking. Immediately pulled emergency brake lever which was on floor between front seats. Broke off in my hand. Plan C was to open door and drag foot. Worked by the Grace!

Another embarassing one one is sitting on the porcelain throne in the middle of an elegant cocktail party.

“I have to get somewhere but I can’t.”

That is the basis of most of my dreams. I can’t get to where I’m trying to get to.

I have a strange recurring dream. My car is out of control and I open the door and drag my foot to slow the car. The road grinds off my foot up to the ankle. That’s when I usually wake up. Had this dream off and on for 70 years.

Hmmm, were you a big Flintstones fan?

They are relevant to one of our other lives on a different time line/reality. Just random leakage - nothing to get concerned about.

We spend so much time in H.S. that those types of dreams are common. Mine was returning from a vacation and not remembering my locker combination. But then again, maybe that really happened :)

Or not having enough credits to graduate from college.

I have similar dreams where I have to do something again at my current age that I’ve already done such as high school, Air Force Officers Training School, etc...all decades in the past.

I have dreamed about shooting people many times, usually I wake up after pulling the trigger or whatever. I had these dreams off and on for years. I have never shot anyone, except I shot my sister in the ass with a BB gun from accross the yard, that BB arched 30 feet in the air.

I’ve had one recurring dream. I’m a child and I’m playing outside by the water pump when I hear the baying of hounds. Looking up I see a pack of black dogs racing down the street toward me. I run to the side door but it’s locked. The dogs are so near now! I run to the back door. Through the pane I see my older brother George. As I reach for the doorknob I hear the click of the lock engaging. Through the glass I see George grinning. The black dogs close in...and I wake up.

I have maybe one dream a year and it is always in black and white. No color at all. Very boring.
