COLUMBIA FALLS, Mont. — A man picking huckleberries in Montana shot and killed a grizzly bear after it attacked and injured him badly enough that he had to be hospitalized.
The 72-year-old man was alone when the adult female charged him Thursday. He killed the bear with a handgun, according to a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks statement Friday.
The attack happened in Flathead National Forest about 2 miles north of Columbia Falls, a northwestern Montana city of about 5,500 people, according to the state wildlife agency.

Beau’s best friend has now permanently moved to Alaska, so he’s been up there a few times over the years.
For as much of a Mountain Man as Beau is, (Black Bear, Elk, Moose, etc. hunter, fisherman, all-around sportsman) AK is too wild for even him.
He likes ‘green.’ And I won’t move anywhere further NORTH than I can grow tomatoes successfully. ;)
Not the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. If you make it back and leave, you have a good chance of escape. If you bump into a Ranger then you can “thank goodness I finally found you”, or “Ranger, I’m hearing gunshots over there, I’m getting out of here, please be careful if you’re headed that way” (as your pistolIs hidden away).
I’ve been to Glacier about 7 times in my life. I am ALWAYS around griz in the outback. See them every time.
I now carry a Ruger Blackhawk flattop in .357 with Buffalo Bore hard cast bullets in a chest rig. Practice by running around the parking lot until winded, run up to the line, twirl around three times until dizzy, and hit 4 out of 6 seven inch steel plates at 25 yards.
I’m ready for my next trip.
