COLUMBIA FALLS, Mont. — A man picking huckleberries in Montana shot and killed a grizzly bear after it attacked and injured him badly enough that he had to be hospitalized.
The 72-year-old man was alone when the adult female charged him Thursday. He killed the bear with a handgun, according to a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks statement Friday.
The attack happened in Flathead National Forest about 2 miles north of Columbia Falls, a northwestern Montana city of about 5,500 people, according to the state wildlife agency.

Ping!......
Ping; I believe this is in line with your interests. I posted this for you.
SJackson Ping! Always bring a gun to a Bear Fight! :)
In before the “Needs more time at the range” or “Needs a bigger caliber” FReepers.
It’s the beginning of huckleberry season. Here in northern Idaho most people know a “private” huckleberry patch. So do the bears.
BkMk to find out caliber, bullet weight, barrel length, hand load or factory, number of shots and where hit.
My Aunt Joanne lived in Alaska. Her sister went to visit her. They were going wild berry picking. Joanne is strapping on her side-arm and her sister said, ‘What’s THAT for?’
Joanne said, ‘Bears like wild berries, too!’
City Sister, LOL!
Picking huckleberries huh? In bear country. At least he brought a little defense with him. The old coot might have known what he was doing.
He was taking the bear’s berries.

You’re quick! Those folks are fast, and they never miss under ANY circumstances. It’s almost unbelievable.
Isn’t national forest plus hand gun a no no?
New EPA poster “Ban huckleberry picking, it’s killing the wildlife”.
Nope, in National Forests you can carry, target shoot, have and hold all you want.
National park is a handgun no-no.
You can walk around with an AK if the spirit moves you.
Nope.. in a National Park you can also carry according to the Supreme Court. Only prohibited in buildings. And yes, you CAN use it for defense in a National Park. They added in some weaselly wording that you cannot have it as “your wildlife defense plan”. Meaning you need to demonstrate that had bear spray, jingle bells and whatever else but that those were ineffective or whatever.
You just cannot holster it and say THAT is your sole wildlife defense plan. And if you use it, you will face a lot of legalistic scrutiny that you will ultimately win, but it won’t be cheap.
In that case if I had to kill a bear or moose in self defense I would not bother even reporting it
(unless you get mauled and have to go to a hospital in which case you can’t avoid saying what happened)
Well, now: Proof it can be done. Great reporting there, KSL.
I think I found the source of the article before it went out on the wire, but right there is the reason all we know is "handgun."
