COLUMBIA FALLS, Mont. — A man picking huckleberries in Montana shot and killed a grizzly bear after it attacked and injured him badly enough that he had to be hospitalized.
The 72-year-old man was alone when the adult female charged him Thursday. He killed the bear with a handgun, according to a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks statement Friday.
The attack happened in Flathead National Forest about 2 miles north of Columbia Falls, a northwestern Montana city of about 5,500 people, according to the state wildlife agency.

We’ve stopped in Columbia Falls on our way to Glacier NP.
Glad this fellow won the day.
When I first glanced at the headline, I thought I saw “Man kicked grizzly.” I guess I was expecting a “Florida Man Visits Yellowstone” story.
“He was taking the bear’s berries.”
Cultural appropriation!
Was he kin to this fella -https://youtu.be/txcRQedoEyY?si=mwXcn0O7CdX6ShTb
Agree.
Hoping that was a /s post. 🤔
But did he tell the bear, “I’m your huckleberry”?
I went to Alaska in the Spring of 2023 as part of a convention trip. Wife signed up my son and me for an ATV tour. Confirmation came back, trip includes trail mix snack, bottled water, yadda yadda, bear repellent.
Me: I’m not interested in any bear repellent that isn’t a firearm in a caliber starting with a four.
Day of, son and I show up first, Jake the awesome guide is prepping the ATVs. Wearing a nice chest rig holding a stainless .44 Mag revolver and a set of reloads. I said “you pass” and proceeded to relay that story above.
Unfortunately we didn’t see any bears in the wild that day or any other day. Would have liked to have seen one - at a distance. We did see lots of other cool critters.
“The old coot might have known what he was doing.”
72 is not old anymore. :-) I resemble that remark.
Whatever the sidearm was, it was big enough.
Try holding a handgun steady with a quart of adrenaline rushing through your veins and Yogi coming at 25 mph.
I’m actually a real old coot myself. At 72, I was just getting started.
are we sure this wasn’t a pit bull?

Are you a fed?
No..are you?
You can open carry in a national park or national forest provided you adhere to state rules regarding the weapon you have.
In our state I can open carry anything legal from an AK to a .357 to a 12 ga. I don’t, but I do legally carry concealed.
If I went to Kalifornia I would be arrested for the possession of anything.
A off subject tidbit, I was in a farm store today buying ammo on a 15% off sale. A Canadian was behind me at the cash register and said up there they need a license just to buy ammo. I asked this guy if he liked Justin, and his reply was how much this jerk looks like Castro.
National forest = all good, full 2A zone.
National park = GFZ.
Big difference.
Yep..thanks.
And they’re going to introduce 25 of these apex predators into Washington State, what could go wrong! Fools.
I would like to know, too. Most people are now choosing the Glock 20 in 10mm for bear country. 16 rounds of fmj will penetrate and get into the boiler room. Plus, fast reloads, even under stress. I handload 10 mm to the old Norma data. I push a 175 gr at 1500 f/s plus. I went with a KKM barrel match barrel as if has a fully supported chamber. 200 yard shots are actually possible with open sights. Resting, of course.
