A new city ordinance in Berkeley, Calif., that officially changes the name from ‘manhole cover’ to ‘maintenance cover’ has stirred up a media commotion. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu).
It is not every day that a change to a municipal code for a medium-sized city makes international news. But when city council in Berkeley, Calif., had its first reading of a proposal to remove gendered language from its municipal code, the media went to town.
The 14-page proposal provides a rationale for the changes, cites legal and grammatical support, specifies the wording that will change and estimates the cost of the initiative at a mere $600. The proposal was part of Berkeley city council’s consent agenda — that is, the portion of any agenda that is deemed so pro forma and uncontroversial that it isn’t brought to the floor for discussion. From Berkeley’s perspective, this was all pretty dry business.
Almost immediately though, the proposal generated dozens of high-profile media stories, the overwhelming majority of which touted in their headlines one particular proposed change: the replacement of “manhole” with “maintenance hole.”

We need to rename this after our Secretary of Transportation but only the first syllable of his last name is allowed.

Plenty of men who wpuldn't think of doing any of those things.
An engineering friend said he went DOWN into the mine with his daughter who was an engineer on the job...a mile down. He said...”Never again”.
Libs love holes, but I guess front hole and rear hole are out. How about “Street hole”? Or is that too close to “Street ho” which would offend all street walkers?
Times are tough in Prog Town.
Silly me. I thought something else was called a “manhole cover”.
Karanadatzia!!!
Years ago working for a large company and in my reports I would talk about “man-made objects”. My boss corrected me that you can’t say “man” - use anthropomorphic instead. It does sound more professional, but it is too fancy for my liking.
Now if they did this in San Francisco.....
Men should stay out of man holes as a general rule.
we’ve made a bunch of jack a**** of ourselves with this pronoun cr**....and giving privileges to trans etc...
Why don’t we take the a$$ out of a$$hole. Do you thing R. Hunter Biden would object just being called a hole?
Didn't immediately dawn on me what you were driving at!
Yes, I am, indeed, that pure-minded!
Regards,
As a professional civil engineer they are called manholes because they provide man-access to the sewer system.
But with vactor trucks for cleaning, the only time a person goes in is during construction to grout them. After that, its pretty rare to enter.

“Tranny Hole”
“to be the dumbest thing”
There are a lot of competitors. A lot. A woman can be a man.
I wouldn’t be surprised if saying “manhole” when referring to a “manhole” cover will get one arrested in Berkeley.
You can camp out on the streets for as long as you like, use them as a toilet, harass people and aggressively panhandle, that is all A-OK, but don’t EVER use the world “manhole” - ditto for using the wrong gender pronoun.
Glad all of my family is out of there.
When will they be taking the ‘black’ out of ‘black hole’?
