Foster + Partners behind plans for 2km-tall Saudi tower
Architect's Journal (UK) ^ | March 4, 2024 | Richard Waite and Gino Spocchia

UK studio Foster + Partners is reportedly designing a two-kilometre-high skyscraper in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which if completed would be the world's tallest building.

According to a report in UK architecture magazine Architects' Journal (AJ), the UK studio is designing the megatall skyscraper for a site to the north of the Saudi capital.

The AJ reports that the skyscraper will be located near the city's international airport, which is currently being redeveloped by Foster + Partners.
Skyscraper would be world's tallest building
If built, the skyscraper would become the world's tallest building, being over twice the height of the current record holder, the 828-metre-high Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The building would also become the tallest building in Saudi Arabia, overtaking the 600-metre-high Abraj Al Bait Royal Clock Tower in Mecca.

The proposal would be Saudi Arabia's second prominent attempt to build the world's tallest building. Designed by Adrian Smith + Gill Gordon Architecture, the 1,000-metre-high Jeddah Tower is currently under construction in Jeddah.

The first images of the prospective tower were released in 2011, with construction starting shortly after in 2013. However, the project has been on hold and only restarted last year.

The Congo is one of the largest and strongest rivers on earth and offers vast opportunities for hydropower generation. Therefore, there has been the idea of building a massive $80BN mega dam: The Grand Inga Dam. In today's video, we will take a closer look at this huge mega-project and whether it can ever be built!

Makes perfect sense. The best thing that can be said about most Norman Foster buildings is that they are big. They lack elegance or grace.

Even if it’s drilled down into the bedrock, it seems like a building solid enough to stand up to winds and such would meet its match in a major quake. Best part, it will/would be another compelling reason to visit Riyadh.

Remember when America used to build these things? America under communism cannot do squat anymore.

There’s no purpose to these apart from prestige for the municipality, the architects, and the builder.

Manhattan skyscrapers were build out of need but that time is passing. With remote work I don’t think many commercial skyscrapers will be built anymore, just condos.

And considering costs, luxury condos. IOW, there’s not a market for that in (for example) NYC. For now.

That’s a good geometry for quake resistance, but even the Great Pyramid suffered from a major quake during construction. The corbels at the top of the Grand Gallery were found (in modern times) to be hanging on by a fraction of the inch on one end. It’s probably the quake that led to the settling that cracked the structure sufficiently that the ancient inspection passage was dug out above the King’s Chamber.

The Great Pyramid is an equilateral pyramid, but a building 2km high would have to be a more flattened type pyramid to transfer all that weight to the bedrock similar to what the ‘flying buttresses’ did for the medieval cathedrals of Europe........................

Steelcase had its first pyramid on 44th e of Eastern, near an apartment where I used to live, but that building has been greatly altered. They built another one I’ve never seen in person:

This place used to be a training center called Productivity Point:

and of course, there’s the Brown family pyramid:

Of course, quakes here are rare and barely detectable.
