Why Europe’s Mandatory Speed Limiters Mean The End Of Driving As You Know It
The Autopian ^ | 8 July 2024 | Matt Hardigree

Posted on 07/08/2024 4:26:55 PM PDT by DUMBGRUNT

If you’re in Europe, it’s now a choice that the government makes. As of July 7th, all new cars sold on the continent or in Northern Ireland have to have a mandatory speed limiter installed. The system is generally known as Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) and it’s probably going to show up on a lot of vehicles in the United Kingdom as well because the country basically shares a car market with the rest of its neighbors.

...drive 88.5 and live on the continent this is your new reality, though there are a couple of ways around it.

...“Arguably ISA will mark the beginning of the end of a world in which people choose their cars on the basis of its top speed and the time it takes to accelerate from 0 to 60mph. "It’s a sign of things to come,” he continued. “Increasingly, the car is going to decide what you can and can’t do.”

I don’t see any evidence of that.

Federal standards are bad enough.

I assume that is 88.5 km—or 52 mph.

PS. ISA is not the same thing. Please don’t use red herring arguments.

This just causes the whole blade runner/cyberpunk thing to start. Bloated bureaucracy can’t compete with engineering individuals.

Once they figure out how to reverse remote hack the device, you’ll have politician’s cars slamming into walls at 200mph.

Then it will suddenly stop.

Recognizing I haven’t driven all areas on the Autobahn, I must say I was disappointed in the areas I did drive there was very little opportunity for unlimited speed due to traffic, road work and speed limits below what I anticipated (or hoped for).

So what happens when one of these restricted automobiles drive on the German Autobahn? Will they be able to speed up, or are they perpetually governed to be slow?

They switched their crusade in the mid eighties from the 55 mph speed limit to stopping drunk driving to later on, any drinking and driving. They are always out for the common person. The only thing I’ve seen some pushback on is red light cameras and side of the road radar. It’s more advisory than punitive.

And the govt. claimed that cars got better mileage at 55.

My ‘66 GTO most certainly did not. 70 mph was the sweet spot for highway fuel economy (20+).

Created a whole industry to circumvent the limit. Radar detectors and CB radios were mandatory for many.I assume hackers will do the same.

“Northern Ireland is part of the UK.

Perhaps they mean the Republic of Ireland?”

There are some EU rules that apply in Northern Ireland to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland so they do mean Northern Ireland as well as the EU

They want to get rid of personal transportation, altogether.

“Unlike here in the U.S. they actually drive civilized in Europe and keep right except to pass.”

There are a lot of things that annoy me about other drivers, that is high on the list.

No the majority of cars and engines were largely not that good. 80s horsepower in cars was pretty poor by todays standards.

And if you need to turn LEFT my experience is you must get in the left lane well ahead of the turnoff because all the leadfoot jackasses won’t let you move over if you actually drive only the speed limit plus 5 or so.

Too many ego-driven cars.

sounds more like a golden opportunity for a entrepreneur with mad hacking skills.

Exactly. It is computer controlled, it will take 1 week for some one to hack it and be selling the hack.

Oh BS.
My carburated Dodge 318 Monaco would spin tires easily and my ‘69 Dart 225 did 90mph .Mom Olds 350 would push you back in the seat.

Airbags and ABS are the main things I consider valuable improvements.Especially since I probably would not have survived without them.
