Democrats fret about hit to Senate chances after Biden debate debacle
The Hill ^ | 6/30/24 | Al Weaver, Alex Gangitano

Democrats are worried President Biden’s dismal debate performance could doom any slim chance the party has for holding its Senate majority by further depressing turnout in critical battleground states.

Democrats were already in a tough electoral spot, with Republicans only needing Montana or Ohio — in addition to their guaranteed pickup in West Virginia — to take the upper chamber. Thursday’s debate debacle only makes the road for incumbents in red or purple states more treacherous.

“Last night was a bad night for the president and it was not a good night for the Democratic Party writ large,” said John LaBombard, a former top aide to former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), and a Democratic strategist with ROKK Solutions. “It made it harder. It for sure made it harder. Every Democrat on the ballot would have benefitted from a terrific debate performance by Joe Biden.”

Biden’s performance — which featured a soft, raspy voice and meandering and sometimes-unintelligible answers — is raising the possibility that Senate Democratic incumbents and candidates will need to run their operations independent of the top of the ticket.

“They’re great candidates. They’re going to run their own races, as they should, in their states,” Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) told reporters in the Capitol on Friday.

Cardin, 80, who is retiring this year, allowed that the president had a “bad evening” and that party members were looking for a “more energetic approach” during the event. However, he stood by him.

Much of the attention remains focused on Sens. John Tester (Mont.) and Sherrod Brown (Ohio), two red-state Democrats whose races likely hold the key to the majority one way or another.

“Cardin, 80, who is retiring this year”

It never occurred to him that senile Joe could follow his example.

Cardin has been an enemy of free people everywhere—but at least he had the decency to know it was time to go.

WV. is a given. Ohio/Mt. are the possibilities. It’s the others, even Hogan I’d welcome. It’s butts in the seats.

That may have been billed as a debate but it quickly morphed into a collective diagnosis by millions of viewers that the medical patient was code red

The Democratic mega donors will be asked to donate huge amounts to contested Congressional contests. Important to identify who these donors are, dox them and put them on notice that if they conspire to violate campaign finance laws, they are subject to arrest and imprisonment.

” . . . . put them on notice that if they conspire to violate campaign finance laws, they are subject to arrest and imprisonment.”

Really? Every Democrat billionaire donor sleeps soundly at night - Soros, Zuckerberg, Melinda Gates, Henry Laufer, Gordon Getty, Lukas Walton, the Pritzkers, Tom Steyer and the rest. They do not fear prosecutors or jail.

You mean, the leader of the Democrat party, Joe Biden, symbolizes the Democrat party?

Huh.

Reckon they should have thought of that.

Fret? No this was planned and they pulled it off. They have messed this country over so bad they know they have lost voters. They played hot potato with ‘24 and will intentionally mess us up more even if it takes WWIII to do it. Why - $$$$$. They know 4 years won’t come close to fixing it but they’ll be out badmouthing Trump for not bringing us back from the depths so they can take it back in the next time (if there’s a world by next time) and claim all the good that was done by others.

These mega donors are knowingly entering into conspiracies to violate campaign finance laws. Let the Trump team make it known that conspiracies to violate campaign finance laws will be prosecuted. These people are not invulnerable either emotionally or legally. History has shown you can get to virtually anyone with serious intent.

I’m not saying send him money. I gave him $10-same with Cornell West. The West contribution was bang for the buck.

Hogan would not be there for eternity but he’d be useful from time to time for 2 terms.

Think Susan Collins and the Kavanaugh vote. A Profile in Courage? Maine? I’d say so. It’s not the same as red state Murkowski.

McCain/Murkowski. Their states are red. They shoda been more conservative but hey weren’t. Replacing Murkowski didn’t work. They tried challenging McLame with that sportscaster dude-didn’t work. So what do we have in Az. except 2 leftists in the Senate? Real smart.

Cardin is a life-long loser and absolute waste of space. He is one of many who represent a strong reason for term limits. Maryland voters are freaks.

Have the liberal doctors that are always diagnosing Trump in the liberal media, given their opinion of Biden’s debate performance?
