So, I read Betelgeuse is going to explode, and its brightness will rival or even exceed the luminosity of the moon. I'm like, BET, how cool will that be???

I research it a little, and I find out it could happen any time, from today all the way out to 1000 years from now.

I'm like, DAMMIT. I won't even be alive a few decades from now!

Yep, remember both, but Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake more than made up for them. I saw Hale-Bopp in the middle of nowhere in the Nevada desert and saw Hyakuyake a few miles south of Denver. Both were spectacular and stretched across a large part of the sky.

The good news is the Betelgeuse exploded 699 years ago and it will be visible briefly next year. The bad news is that its poles are aligned directly at Earth and we will be hit with a gamma ray burst. Even if you don’t die immediately, you’ll quickly go blind and then linger for a few days. Like the aftermath of a Hillary fart.

As Betelgeuse is between 400 and 800 light years away, if it did super-nova, it would have happened 400 to 800 years ago.

The spin pole of Betelgeuse is pointed towards Earth. Not a good thing. At 650 light years it could already have blown up while Columbus was sailing but the light has no reached here yet
