I've been on FR since the Bush years, first as a lurker and then more active during Obama and the initial Tea Party movement. Throughout that time, there always has been active and for the most part respectful debate on FR, that sometimes got a bit heated but we all basically wanted the same thing for the country, even if it meant different ways to get there.
With the Trump years, I was skeptical of Trump at first in 2016 since he was an unknown, but then he won me over when he was actually President. You can find my posts from his years in office where I defended him. That said - there was enough left on the table, like a number of bad hires who kept undermining him, that I wanted to see a competitive primary and a candid discussion on both his record and what would be different this time around if he gets the nod.
Well that's when things got weird. We never had that discussion. It just became a yelling match, and if I wanted to do that, I'd just go join those Palestine weirdos on college campuses. No thanks.
Guys, Bob Good had an excellent 100% conservative voting record. Trump primaried him for his one and only crime which was endorsing DeSantis, even though after the primary, Bob Good came to visit Trump during his trial in NYC.
This isn't giving me any confidence that Trump has learned from his mistakes of bad hires and bad endorsements. We should have completely dominated the 2022 midterms but a number of bad endorsements sabotaged us. Dr. Oz? Seriously? Yes Arizona had some shady things with their election, but there were a bunch of other cases where Trump endorsed a weak candidate - OR, he's been backing people who DO win and then vote RINO when it counts. We can't keep saying "we want better people in Congress" and then let things like this slide.
Why I care: the grassroots activist right has always played an important role. I saw during the Bush years on FR that we'd organize campaigns to write letters to Congress to push for our values. Same during the Obama years, which is how we prevented Obama from doing a lot of gun grabbing and so forth. There was minimal of that during the Trump years. It was just "trust the plan". This isn't helpful. Politics was meant to be an active process that citizens participate in. During the Trump years, it seemed to turn into just a spectator sport. That's not how this is supposed to work.
Is this really what we want, no real political power because we actively are pushing RINOs into office to replace conservatives, but at least we "own the libs" with snarky internet remarks? Is this really the best we can do? And look, I know the left is unfairly attacking Trump, but Trump or ANY Republican needs to get pressured from the right as well, so he actually does what we want. I know the left is going to attack Trump, or anyone to the right of Rachel Maddow for that matter, but it's really getting frustrated that any pressure for accountability *from the right* is dismissed or actively trolled.
Bob Good shouldn't have even been in a competitive race. He was as solid as they get. This is getting ridiculous.
He endorsed DeSantis do you want trump to endorse him now? I’m sorry he lost but I think you did it to himself
Because Trump’s endorsements have always been……less than stellar. Good was one of us.
Trump endorsed some establishment people in the past who were against him. Trump, like all of us, has his flaws. I wish Desantes didn’t cave on Ukraine in the first week.
I was "really okay" with Good and Trump. But Good endorsed DeSantis and Trump then endorced Good's opponent.
The suck started with Bob Good.
So you’re fine with a less conservative Congress because Trump got his feelings hurt...? At what point is this still America First or is it just Trump First?
It’s honestly refreshing to hear someone say that on here.
The important thing is we keep the seat. If this winner ends up losing the house seat than this was dumb. But if he’s even a better conservative than Good then we win even more. I’m not sure of the make up of the district or the democrat running against this new guy. Hopefully it works out in the end.
Good made his bed. He may yet pull out a win.
“With 98 percent of the ballots counted, the Associated Press reported, state Senator John McGuire, whom Trump has endorsed, led incumbent Representative Bob Good by just 327 votes (50.3 percent to 49.7 percent). The remaining votes are not expected to be counted on Wednesday as Virginia observes the Juneteenth federal holiday.”
“If the margin of victory between the candidates is less than 1 percent, the race—which has not been called by the AP or other prominent news outlets—could head to a recount.”
I congratulate Navy SEAL, John McGuire, and our Senate Candidate, Navy Special Operations Captain (Retired), Hung Cao. The campaign fight between McGuire was nasty. Trump’s endorsement of McGuire, plus Don Shipley telling me John is a good guy, BUD/S Class 164, SEAL Team FOUR, won my vote.
Good’s endorsement...wasn’t.
He chose poorly.
yup-—especially since Trump endorsed Good in 2020. It seems that politicians, in general, have very short memories.

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — Representative Bob Good (R-VA, 5th District) has endorsed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for president.
Gov. DeSantis has not yet declared he is running for president but some speculate he will announce in the next few weeks as Florida’s legislative session wraps up.
During his campaign in 2020, Congressman Good was endorsed by then-President Donald Trump.
He’s apparently endorsed an Anti-Trump candidate in Utah. What’s up with that? Someone is giving Trump very bad advice. And that does seem to be a pattern.
BUMP
People have to understand what conservatism is. They are stuck in the past.
With $36T in debt, all issues of tax and spend no longer mean anything. That debt level has no solution. There is nothing that can be done.
It is not at all clear why this guy backstabbed Trump. Why would he think that would have no repercussions?
There are only two issues. The Border and the Swamp, which means eradication of incumbents. That is conservatism from now on, and Good was an incumbent, so that worked against him.
As for his anti vax anti mask obsession, that would at least be consistent except that he announced the virus is real. If he had announced there was no virus, then he would have been consistent in ignoring death counts. But he said it was real, which suggested he didn’t want any efforts to stop killing old people. But I doubt this moved many votes.
He backstabbed himself when he backstabbed Trump.
1. You do not know why trump didn’t endorse Good.
2. If Good can’t realistically win, there’s no point in endorsing him.
3. To win control of Congress, you have to win races… even in districts that would only elect a RINO.
I don’t know who this guy is, but the buzzwords to me are telling...
Conservative is the first buzzword. That usually means deep state.
The more conservative a ranking a person gets, the more swamp they are.
My own rep gets a solid conservative rating.
She has not seen a deep state bill that she did not vote for.
Some of us tried to have that discussion. The Trumpkins would not allow it.
Good volunteered to be Trump’s example that less than total loyalty will not and cannot be tolerated. It is a shame that the sour music stopped and Good has no chair to sit on but he DiD do this to himself.
