A new paradigm . . . the earth plus plastic-eating fungus.

Oh, Gus the gardener’s left now and you went with him, too
The fungus here reminds me of the fun Gus is having with you
The rockery’s a mockery, with weeds it’s overgrown
The fuchsia’s gone, I couldn’t face the fuchsia all alone

And my tears fell like raindrops from the sky above
And poisoned all the flowers in my garden of love

Mutant 59: The Plastic-Eaters

Written in 1971.

At the conclusion of "The Andromeda Strain" (the novel), the extraterrestrial organism also mutates to consume plastic.

Yes, I'm a nerd!

Many years ago I read a book series where they developed an organism that ate oil to clean up the oceans. It did not end well.

Wikipedia: Pedler and Davis reused the plot of the first episode of the [British sci-fi t.v.] series [Doomwatch ], "The Plastic Eaters", for their 1971 novel Mutant 59: The Plastic Eater.

Regards,

Plastic is made from oil. Oil has been leaking into the ocean for millions of years. Where there is a natural pollutant there is a natural clean up system.

This is a bit Pollyanna. There may be a natural organism (maybe this fungus) that will break down plastics. Plastics are NOT molecularly the same as oil. Over 1 million metric tons of plastics are produced daily. Every complex species on the planet has micro-plastics trapped in its liver, including those in the deepest ocean.

I think plastics pollution is a great threat to the ecology of the planet. This is easily solvable. There are other materials that will do the job of plastics in nearly every instance. They're just more expensive.

We should still use plastic, but only when there is a recycle/recovery plan for the article.

Atomic bombs are made from Cobalt. Cobalt can be found in the ground all over the planet and even in dinnerware. Atomic bombs must be as safe as mothers-milk.....

Wow.

You took what I said, twisted it, added parts I never said and then produced a strawman to argue with on an entirely different topic.
