Commonly used alcohol-based mouthwash brand may disrupt the balance of your oral microbiome, scientists say
Medical Xpress / Microbiology Society / Journal of Medical Microbiology ^ | June 4, 2024 | Dr. Jolein Laumen et al

Posted on 06/08/2024 9:29:11 PM PDT by ConservativeMind

The oral microbiome is the community of bacteria that live in the mouth. It helps us digest our food and keep our mouth healthy. Changes to the composition of the oral microbiome have been linked to periodontal diseases and some cancers.

New research is a follow-up to a larger study investigating the use of mouthwash. Researchers wanted to explore further and investigate whether the mouthwash used had an impact on the oral microbiome of the patients.

Researchers found that two species of opportunistic bacteria were significantly more abundant in the mouth after three months of daily use of the alcohol-based mouthwash, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Streptococcus anginosus. These two bacteria have been previously linked to gum disease, esophageal and colorectal cancers. Researchers also saw a decrease in a group of bacteria called Actinobacteria, which are crucial contributors to the regulation of blood pressure.

Dr. Jolein Laumen, said, "Alcohol-based mouthwashes are widely available. The public may use them daily to tackle bad breath or prevent periodontitis, but they should be aware of the potential implications. Ideally, long-term usage should be guided by health care professionals."

There have been other studies showing antibacterial mouthwash kills the Actinobacteria in our mouths, which directly create a substance that allows use of nitrate to allow our blood vessels to relax, which is a major way our body regulates blood pressure.

Try forgoing antibacterial mouthwash for a few weeks and see if you notice your blood pressure going lower.

Good post. Blood pressure aspect isn’t obvious at first glance.

Alcohol killing bacteria is.

My dentist recommended that I not use mouthwashes containing alcohol.

To be fair, it isn’t the alcohol killing the bacteria, it is the other antibacterial agents doing it.

The alcohol in these mouthwashes is not enough to kill germs. It’s really only there to make you think it’s doing something.

The mouthwash in this study was Listerine, which has other germ killing substances.

That was probably due to alcohol encouraging dry mouth.

It isn’t helpful for anything in a mouthwash, strangely. It can’t even kill germs. It’s nowhere near strong enough.

Algore, you can read a lot of the same stuff about the activity of antibacterial mouthwash in the other studies, like this one:

Over-the-counter mouthwash use, nitric oxide and hypertension risk

If I want to use mouthwash, I use half hydrogen peroxide, half water, then rinse with plain water.

The studies quote 2mm increase in systolic and 0mm
0 diastolic.

That is barely measurable

The home BP meter my cardiologist gave me won't repeat within 10mmHg most of the time.

I do that too, but it's not recommended for daily use; perhaps once a week.

The hydrogen peroxide will damage the enamel on the teeth if used too frequently.

Listerine used to make a mouthwash called Strong Teeth. Tasted great.
They discontinued it late last year.
