The oral microbiome is the community of bacteria that live in the mouth. It helps us digest our food and keep our mouth healthy. Changes to the composition of the oral microbiome have been linked to periodontal diseases and some cancers.
New research is a follow-up to a larger study investigating the use of mouthwash. Researchers wanted to explore further and investigate whether the mouthwash used had an impact on the oral microbiome of the patients.
Researchers found that two species of opportunistic bacteria were significantly more abundant in the mouth after three months of daily use of the alcohol-based mouthwash, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Streptococcus anginosus. These two bacteria have been previously linked to gum disease, esophageal and colorectal cancers. Researchers also saw a decrease in a group of bacteria called Actinobacteria, which are crucial contributors to the regulation of blood pressure.
Dr. Jolein Laumen, said, "Alcohol-based mouthwashes are widely available. The public may use them daily to tackle bad breath or prevent periodontitis, but they should be aware of the potential implications. Ideally, long-term usage should be guided by health care professionals."

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
Using peroxide as a mouthwash causes black hairy tongue.
“Using peroxide as a mouthwash causes black hairy tongue.”
And who doesn’t want that? (Eeeeewwww.)
The reason my dentist recommends alcohol-based mouthwash is that it reduces decay and helps gum inflammation. Life is tradeoffs.
You have outdone your self today. So many excellent articles.
Thank you for all the time you spend posting medical research.
Your outstanding effort is greatly appreciated.

I use 1/3 mouthwash to 2/3 water in a water pic. With dental implants it easily gets under bridging.
I hope cutting the percentage helps.
Exactly. The study folks are not stupid. They likely had a very reliable device. But one inch of height on the arm is 4 mm difference. A change of sitting position can move things a few mm.
And different agencies have different standards. Some will mandate sub 130 systolic for elderly, and some say that will generate a day when BP got low and cause a fall.
Regardless, 2mm is nothing.
I also thank you, CM, for all of the information you bring us.
Dr. Tichenor’s Mouthwash has a much higher alcohol content than Listerine.
It’s peppermint flavored, and works great on sore gums.
It’s been around since 1864, and was used on wounded soldiers during the War Between the States as a disinfectant.

βFigure 3 shows the key results. People who used mouthwash β₯ twice/daily showed higher incidence of physician-diagnosed hypertension (IRR=1.85, 95% CI: 1.17β2.94) compared to less frequent users, and compared to non-users (IRR=2.17, 95% CI: 1.27β3.71). Compared to non-users, people who used mouthwash once daily showed significantly higher increase in SBP over the follow-up (Ξ²=3.60, 95% CI: 0.52β6.68). Additional analyses (not shown in tables) comparing β₯ 1/day versus never use showed significant associations for the physician-diagnosed hypertension (IRR=1.72, 95% CI: 1.06β2.77) as well as for DBP change (Ξ²=1.72, 95% CI: 0.20β3.25).β
I read that as a 3.6 mm Hg for just using mouthwash once a day. Also, those who used it twice a day had an 85% greater likelihood of having hypertension over those who only used it once a day.
You also notice fewer friends.
Try this instead:
βThe protocol is to take a heaping teaspoon of Baking Soda and load your toothbrush with it. Then holding the toothbrush at a 45ΒΊ angle to the tooth, brush into the gums, working the baking soda into the gums. Use all of the Baking soda and hit all off the gums line. Brush your tongue and the back of your tongue with a tongue brush. Leave the residue. Do not rinse. You will get to like the taste.β
Very interesting!
Chewing it will be hard on your teeth.

People were hoping that mouthwash was a good thing to repel covid, but even the Listerine brand rejected the temptation to claim it and cash in.

Do note it could be perfectly viable for COVID, yet, cause other issues.
Pick your poison.
Never had that happen. I only use it occasionally, anyway.
2mm increase in blood pressure is not insignificant. However, there are other considerations:
One thing the mouthwash might cut down on is gum inflammation. I am not a medical professional so my conjecture is uncredentialed, but we hear that infections can come to the heart valves via infection in the gums. Doesn’t the mouthwash cut down on the possibility of an infection path via the gums?
Also, I normally rinse with water after I swish full strength mouthwash around my just cleaned teeth.
Wow. Good to know.
