Where Did Russia's Black Sea Fleet Go?
Newsweek ^ | 6/7/2024 | David Brennan

Posted on 06/08/2024 6:50:02 AM PDT by marcusmaximus

A large part of Russia's mauled Black Sea Fleet was seen leaving the port of Novorossiysk this week, with satellite images suggesting the berths of the southern Russian port had been largely emptied despite the ever-present threat posed by Ukrainian maritime drones and missiles.

The intentions of the vessels departing Novorossiysk—further from Ukrainian-controlled territory and considered safer than the Crimean ports repeatedly bombarded by Kyiv's forces—remain unclear.

-snip-

The Black Sea Fleet has been forced to largely abandon its traditional bases of choice on the occupied Crimean Peninsula because of numerous—and ever more sophisticated—Ukrainian long-range attacks. Despite having no conventional navy of note, Ukraine has scored repeated successes against the Russian fleet at sea.

Among the most high-profile Black Sea Fleet losses to date are its flagship guided missile cruiser Moskva, the Rostov-on-Don attack submarine, and several Ropucha-class landing ships. Kyiv also destroyed the fleet's headquarters building in Sevastopol in a cruise missile strike in 2023.

“About to hold naval exercises off of Cuba?”

They’re definitely showing up there. But you do have to wonder about the Zeepers, at this point. They know full well that the war will be lost, especially now with China openly siding with Russia, yet they seem to get off on killing a few Ruzzians at a time, while totally OBLIVIOUS to the 500,000 or so Ukrainians that the Neocons had killed in the process. It’s like a sickness.

Mediterranean? Could those drones land at a secret airfield and refuel? Perhaps one of those isolated islands in the Aegean. No one has to know. We need to know this to stop fighting the last war.

Russia is trying to build major port facilities on Syria's Mediterranean coast line.

I do not recall seeing any news stories on that in the last year.

Russia only has one warm water port - on Crimea, in the Black Sea, pretty much surrounded by NATO countries and hostiles like Ukraine.

It is likely that most of the Zeepers are Americans working for the MIC who are attempting to protect their cheese. The Forever War has been very good to them and they do not want it to stop even if it destroys the country and the world. They're so rabid and rancid now I bet they would be happy to die in a nuclear fire while counting their 30 pieces of silver.

You Russians are a pain with your passionate desire to murder innocents and commit genocide but for you murder just another day’s work, other than spewing personal insults on FR every which way, as if that somehow makes your bloody hands and, what passes for a conscious, washed clean.

Russia's new Black Sea naval base alarms Georgia , BBC, Dec 12, 2023.

Russia started work on improving her naval base at Ochamchire, Georgia, last year. It is 400 miles away from Sevastopol. This is in the territory seized in the 2008 Russo-Georgian war.

None of the Black Sea fleet is allowed to leave. Turkey closed it back at the start of their invasion. Russian still has both its Northern and Pacific fleets free to go wherever the MoD sends them.

If it is within 2,000 km UKR drones can still reach it, as can submersibles.

“recently forbade the use of the terms “orcs” and “pigs””

I never understood that children’s book Harry Potter, lord of the rings terminology getting popular. Does that mean Ukrainians are Hobbits or something?

That’s the nice thing about sea drones only needing to make one, one way trip, and the Black Sea is at most 730 miles or 1,200 km wide. As long as Russia keeps her navy in the Black Sea, there is nowhere for them to hide, and no good options to protect their fleet.

The Black Sea Fleet is the second smallest Fleet. The Pacific and Northern fleets have 90% of Russia’s naval strength, and that’s what Russia is beefing up.

Russia is evil (and Communist), but it’s not stupid.

The Russian fleet cannot leave the Black Sea because Turkey will not let them transit the Bosporous. See the Montreaux Convention.

One other observation: Now that Russia has neutralized the Neocon Recon drones, we don’t see few if any more deep strikes against Russia, such as in Crimea, or even well behind the lines in Donbass. Seems the Ukrainians are now blind.

About 1/3 of any modern navy is always alongside in replenishment or refit. Many of those are ready to weigh anchor on short notice.

Russia, OTOH, “brags” about how most of their ships are always active. But this means critical maintenance and replenishment is being skipped.
