A cow elk will hurt you.
A bull elk can kill you.
Please remember that when you want to take that picture or selfie.

Comparatively speaking, elk bites are not that nasty.

Been to Estes Parks several times. It’s changed over the years from when I first went there decades ago. Love going to the Stanley Hotel (The Shining). I go in the fall so yep, there be elk all about (even in the street or sidewalk). Give them a wide berth and always have a getaway plan.

My wife was out walking one morning in Estes Park about ten years ago and came across a large harem and a bull right in town. Fortunately, she wasn't hurt.
"...irate cow elk protecting their calves" -- is this idiot writer infected with the Woke Mind Virus? Proper English would be "irate cow elk protecting HER calves." Momma is singular female. Singular Momma has babies. Momma is a singular HER, not a plural their.

I always loved the elk on my visits to Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park. They are one of my favorite animals. I was once observing a herd when it gradually surrounded me, about 50 elk. I kept backing up, backing up, but they surrounded me. I realized this was not a safe situation, but the elk peacefully grazed around me, including the herd bull. Eventually, I made my way out from among the herd. It was a unique experience.

When my youngest daughter was a toddler (she’s 12 now), she went through a phase of wanting to watch elk videos before bed. “Elk sounds!” she would say, and she would sit on my lap and watch a YouTube video of Estes Park. Six minutes long. Every night.

A woman elk is a cow, not a doe.
In our day of city people being isolated from nature, these interactions of critters with unaware humans is just going to be an increasing reality.
Many people can only learn by doing.
