Hip-Hop is Declining in Popularity

It was only in 2018 when hip-hop surpassed rock 'n' roll to become the most popular music genre in the U.S., but its glory was short-lived.

In 2023—the year when hip-hop celebrated its 50th birthday— the music genre that gave a voice to millions seemed to be losing its appeal.

While 2023 was marked with historic performances by hip-hop royalty at major events, the newer generation struggled to make a dent on the charts.

**SNIP**

Or as musicologist and historian Zachary Diaz told Newsweek, there has been a "musical gentrification" of hip-hop which has seen corporations and big music labels try to profit from its popularity. This has led to a "dilution" of the sound that hip-hop appears in all kinds of music, movies, and advertisements that it has crossed over into other genres, so there is not even a clear idea of what hip-hop is anymore.

**SNIP**

Treva Lindsey is a professor at The Ohio State University and she told Newsweek that she had hope for the "tremendous possibility" and dynamism in all hip-hop culture— which includes graffiti, break dancing, and deejaying, among others— but the genre might be a victim of its own success.

**SNIP**

"For some, this most recent rap battle and the deployment of very serious allegations of intimate partner violence and sexually predatory behavior as "ammunition" signal a deeply entrenched and intractable misogyny that has plagued rap music for decades," she said, referring to the recent beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, and also the very serious allegations of sexual trafficking and abuse leveled at hip-hop mogul Diddy, aka Sean Combs. He has denied all allegations.

I remember the day I was just switching channels on the TV, and I came across a concert on the PBS station with these four guys that looked like they were in a typical rock band, but they were playing jazz.

It was The Pat Metheny Group, and it totally changed everything for me. I rushed out to the local Peaches and got every Metheny album I could get my hands on. It was my gateway into Jazz. Before that, I couldn’t have come up with the names of any jazz musicians.

The current zeitgeist to go ghetto in dress, language and music is laziness, from my point of view.

SIMPLE.. yet, VERY ACCURATE assessment!

Same here. He’s doing great work. I bought his book about five years ago and have been teaching myself the music theory that I never really got as a self taught player. It has been revolutionary for me.

I go about once a week for the hot tub and the pool.

And most of the women are nothing to look at.

I do most of my physical exercises at home.

I always laugh at one of the most important members of the “crew”. The idiot that sounds like he’s wheezing real bad.

His interview with Metheny is one of his best. Years ago I was given As Falls Wichita So Falls Wichita Falls on vinyl by a family member and would listen to the A side sometimes as a background soundscape to fall asleep to, but never really listened to the B side. Then finally I gave it a real listen and realized how good it is. That was an early nudge in the jazz direction for me. I’m still not a true jazz guy but I’ve come to see how important jazz knowledge is for writing pop songs.

Hip hop and rap are two different things. Which one is dying?

I’m still a fan of “the big band sound.” I lost interest in most ‘current’ music in the mid-70’s when huge speakers blasting out “noise” and the lyrics to the songs were drown out.

The day I heard that Lyle Mays passed, I was an emotional wreck. It felt like a death in the family.

Yeah, kinda expensive options for private ownership.

**And most of the women are nothing to look at.**

Ha ha, those places have wall mirrors too, right? That makes it twice as many not to look at. Lol

One of the reasons I’m moving to Idaho is to get away from my next door neighbor that blasts his F’ing Hip Hop music all the time in his car and in his back yard.

The music theory stuff is totally over my head.

If you learn to play the piano it will all make sense. Theory and the fretboard don’t mix well.

Uh, oh. I’m pretty sure it’s in the brochure. Fingers crossed you’re a big fan of old-school boom-bap.

Idaho Hip Hop

Idaho hip hop music is a unique blend of traditional hip hop sounds with a modern twist. The genre is characterized by its heavy use of electronic beats, catchy hooks, and introspective lyrics that touch on themes of personal growth, self-discovery, and overcoming adversity. The artists who represent this genre are known for their raw, unfiltered approach to music-making, and their ability to connect with audiences on a deep, emotional level. Whether you’re a fan of old-school boom-bap or more experimental sounds, Idaho hip hop has something to offer for everyone.

Angry black millionaires angrily shouting out rhymes about how unfair society is to them can only go so far.

At some point people start wanting to see actual talent.
