One of MLB’s most infamous umpires, Ángel Hernández, is planning on retiring on Tuesday, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed.
USA Today first reported the news late Monday night.
Major League Baseball and Hernández were negotiating a financial settlement over the past two weeks and came to an agreement during the holiday weekend, according to the report.
Hernández, a Cuban-American, is viewed by far as the league’s most controversial umpire for his propensity to miss calls and had previously sued for racial discrimination back in 2017, claiming that he had been passed over for World Series assignments and a crew chief position due to his race.
That lawsuit was dismissed in 2021 and an appeals court upheld that ruling last year.
Hernández, 62, umped his last game back on May 9 as the home plate ump in a game between the White Sox and Guardians in Cleveland.
He became a full-time MLB umpire in 1993.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today had it first, but that article can't be posted here.
Woohoo!! Of course, now there will be fewer youtube videos of bad umpiring....
Should have been “fired like a dog” years ago.
I bet MLB is offering Angel $10 million to retire.
Kristi Noem.
You rang?
ESPN will offer him a commentary job.
… after a 31 year career.
I don’t know about that. No one likes him.
They should pass the hat among MLB hitters.
MLB statement: “Angel Hernandez has been replaced by an actual blind person who we believe will be a far more accurate umpire.”
This is the number one reason unions completely suck. As bad as Angel Hernandez is, there should be no negotiating...he should just be fired for incompetence.
“I didn’t know they made the rulebook in Braille.”
“That’s not even a strike in beeper ball.”
C.B. Bucknor will be the next target.
Kinda like that Cuban judge in Trump’s case. He misses all the calls too... But on purpose.
Wonderful news. I hear some <MLB leagues are using the graphic box with he umps having ear pieces that bleep if the box is touched, else it’s a ball. I’m down. Brewers should have had a shut out today.
Indeed.
He’ll probably get invited to the White House where Biden will say, “I can relate to this guy.”
