‘Goop’ Contributor and Former Surgeon Claimed Smoking Linked to Longer Lifespans
New York Post ^ | May 25, 2024 | Matthew Sedacca

A health guru claimed puffing on cigarettes is linked to longer living — but now he’s trying to extinguish the controversy.

“The men in Sardinia have a seven year longer lifespan than the women because they’re smokers. That’s what brings them up,” Dr. Steven Gundry, a former cardiac surgeon and contributor to Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow’s website, insisted in a viral December interview with celebrity physician Dr. Mikhail Varshavski.

During the combative, nearly two-hour-long debate, which has racked up over 2.4 million views on YouTube, the far-out physician also cited a 2020 study that found a decrease in deaths from Parkinson’s disease among doctors who smoked. “British doctors who smoke have a 30% less incidence of Parkinson’s and dementia,” Gundry said. “Yeah, because they die of 10 other diseases beforehand,” retorted Varshavski — known as “Dr. Mike.”

Chief William Red Fox lived to be 105. When asked about his longevity he said it was from smoking cigars.

Maybe if it was 100% tobacco, instead of all the carcinogens they add in. I don’t really know what pure tobacco does to the body.

Also, A person’s DNA must have an enormous influence. Which is why grannies and the chief escaped cancer.

Nicotine is a stimulate. As such, it has been shown to help with short term memory. Years ago when I did smoke in college, cramming for test consisted of lots of caffeine and nicotine from cigarettes. So there might be some truth to the Parkinson disease issue. They need to do a study on nicotine effects and neuromuscular diseases.

Both my parents and my three siblings smoked. I never did. I’m the only one left, and the only one who made it to 75. I’ll be 77 in August. Both parents and a sister died of lung cancer. My only brother who stopped smoking after a heart attack at the age of 48, dropped dead of a massive heart attack at 51. My oldest sister, who was an alcoholic and suffered alcohol-induced dementia, lived longer than any of them, until the age of 74, and that was only because she’d been institutionalized for many years, and didn’t have access to alcohol or cigarettes. I have my own health issues, some of which none of them ever had.

U.S. Grant was an avid cigar smoker. He died of throat and tongue cancer in 1885.

I think he’s most known for saying that solanaceae vegetables like tomatoes, eggplants and peppers are very unhealthy and should be avoided at all cost.

He is correctly citing the damage done by lectin proteins to the gut lining. He is simultaneously discounting the benefits of lycopene (for example) found in tomatoes. Most of the latter's toxins are in the seeds, which are strained out in making sauces.

In other words, nutrition is complex, and the maxim "the poison is in the dose" is to be taken seriously. Balance is necessary. Life is fatal anyway. Etc.

Gundry is a charlatan and saying tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers are bad for you should be proof enough of that. How can anyone believe a word he says at that point? He also says that fruit causes type 2 diabetes -- calls them toxic candies or some other fear porn phrase. Zero evidence to back that up. As if all the fat type 2s are that way because they ate too much fruit.

As far as lectins go, cooking neutralizes lectins ... and I don't know anyone who eats beans or lentils raw. The most long-lived societies on the planet are grain and bean eaters ... and I'm guessing tomatoes and eggplants are probably also in their diet as well.

Sorry, these quack diet guys get me going. The blood type diet guy D'Adamo (zero evidence for his theories as well), Gundry with his lectin screed - both promoting nonsense and sell garbage "supplements" (of course) - are shameless con men.

I’m sure if you buy everything Goop sells and follow them, you can live forever. Or if you follow that Tech CEO guy, I can’t think of his name. Can you? Is he the one who always gets blood transfusions?

I just try to stay healthy enough to keep working: Fasting 16hrs daily, no A1 casein, minimal lectins, low carbs, a pretty extensive supplment regimen, and work itself having a real purpose and finite goals.

You might find this Native Plant Talk I just did for a local museum of interest to you.
