Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was killed after a helicopter carrying him and other officials crashed in the mountainous northwest reaches of Iran on Sunday.

Raisi, 63, was confirmed dead by Iranian media today along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Governor of Eastern Azerbaijan province Malek Rahmati and Tabriz's Friday prayer Imam Mohammad Ali Alehashem.

Two pilots and three other Iranian officials and security guards also perished in the crash.

Grainy drone footage from Iranian and Turkish news agencies showed how the helicopter had smashed apart on landing, and an Iranian official said the search teams who located the wreckage found 'no sign of life'.

Footage shared by the Iranian Red Crescent later this morning showed solemn rescuers carrying corpses on covered stretchers as they made their way through the forest from the crash site.

The nation's government held an 'urgent meeting' this morning, with Raisi's chair left vacant and covered in a black sash.

According to Iran's constitution, a new presidential election will need to be called within 50 days.

But Raisi's death is sure to trigger a power struggle, with a variety of ambitious candidates now set to vie for power.

Images circulated on social media showed Iranian citizens taking to the streets in mourning in the hours following the announcement of the president's death.

Raisi, who became president of Iran in 2021, was widely seen as a vassal for the regime and a yes man to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

He stormed to the presidency with a huge majority following the 2021 elections - but less than half of Iran's electorate turned out to vote after many more moderate candidates were barred from running.

As a young student at a religious seminary in the holy city of Qom, Raisi took part in protests against the Western-backed Shah...

I think there is no source that opines on the cause of a Helo crash in mountainous terrain in 24 hours as reliable. Whoever said it was bad weather is just as questionable as someone saying it was shot down.

BTW, do you see Ruskies hiding in your bushes? Is everything they say a lie?

I will tell you that I am no more skeptical of the Russians than I am of the Biden Administration including our intelligence apparatus.

***showed how the helicopter had smashed apart on landing***

Sounds like a landing at “Terminal Velocity.”

The Iranians got the very government their parents and grandparents rioted for in 1978.

Enjoy!

“Lots of Iranians yearning to be free.”

They got the government their parents and grandparents rioted for in 1978.
I always figured the grand children would have enough of their parent’s stupidity and soon riot to overthrow the mullahs if they had the guns.

Yup, college students attacked US Embassy. Took a Ronald Reagan victory to get back those hostages.

The Bell model bought by Iran is made in Italy. The Iranians also copied/made their own model of the Bell— calling it Shabuz- iirc. If it was the Iranian made— highly possible it was a crap copy with a crap pilot, with these being possible additional factors.

Also— according to the article there were 9 total passengers on that helo. Back when there were Bell Rangers, and they are still flying (old ones) will have to look up maximum passengers inclusive of two pilots. This article said the Pres, Foreign Minister, Prayer Imam, Gov of Easter Azerbaijan, and 3 security guards, plus the pilots. 9 total in weather conditions that might have needed weight reduction for higher elevation flight (not vfr in soup fog in mountains w/out terrain avoid radar etc?). Average weight of 180-190 lbs= 1610 to 1710 lbs of passengers, not including luggage, ammo, weapons and gear.

Just some thoughts.

For those interested, Azerbaijan has highly monitored, OK relations with Israel, and have in the past purchased weapons systems from Israeli Defense Industries and the gov. of Israel. Azerbaijan is it’s own country, and Iran describes having an “Eastern Province of Azerbaijan” in the country of Iran— whose uh, Governor (of the Eastern Province of Azerbaijan) was killed along with Raisi, and the Iranian Foreign Minister (Abdollahaian- a strange name mixed with an Armenian common name ending.. for what that’s worth. Have to look into that guy’s background- Armenian Shiite muslim? That would be unusual. Keep in mind Armenia and Azerbaijan are at war right now. Vicious. Nagorno-Karabahk center of the conflict).

Pieces of the puzzle, if it is not truly an accident. Azerbaijan has little trust for real in Iran—hence the dam on the river dedicated by Iran who paid for it... etc.

Tidbits.
