A long-term ketogenic diet accumulates aged cells in normal tissues, new study shows

A strict "keto-friendly" diet popular for weight loss and diabetes, depending on both the diet and individual, might not be all that friendly.

A new study led by researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio) found that a continuous long-term ketogenic diet may induce senescence, or aged, cells in normal tissues, with effects on heart and kidney function in particular. However, an intermittent ketogenic diet, with a planned keto vacation or break, did not exhibit any pro-inflammatory effects due to aged cells, according to the research.

The findings have significant clinical implications suggesting that the beneficial effect of a ketogenic diet might be enhanced by planned breaks.

"To put this in perspective, 13 million Americans use a ketogenic diet, and we are saying that you need to take breaks from this diet or there could be long-term consequences," said David Gius.

Gius is lead author of the new study titled, "Ketogenic diet induces p53-dependent cellular senescence in multiple organs," published May 17 in the journal Science Advances.

Well, as one who has had a problem with A1c levels for many years, what is your weight, your body mass index

From my experience, a significant decrease in A1c correlated directly to a weight loss and BMI decrease to say 29 or so.

Being completely un interested in veganism, I had health problems with low protein lab tests and low vitamin B 12 level. My problem is age, not veggies.

While studying how to increase protein level and B 12, I became aware the there are two industries dedicated to both and the result of veganism. Walmart has a whole aisle with protein powder. Ebay has countless B 12 products. Both are directed to Vegans/vegetarians who are in fact dying because they eat only plants.

Interesting. The HIV infection causes its infected to prematurely age 14 years, even when treated by PrEP.

It’s VERY interesting, isn’t it?

I had no idea that they could detect aging cells. It opens all sorts of possibilities.

I’m curious as to the effects of long-term systemic inflammation upon cells, especially in the organs (e.g., CKM syndrome possible cause).

But, again, I doubt the good research will originate from the US.

“And just who would those be?”

That was my question too. Back when I had my Keto/Low Carb ping list here, there had to be 50 or 60 long-time FReepers here that had incredible results from Keto. Were they paid by “Big Keto” too. If so, why wasn’t I offered a piece of the action, after all, I was more of an ‘influencer’ than most of those 50 or 60 people (since I controlled the list).

Which then leads to the OBVIOUS question: Why does he want us sick and dying?

The “Take Charge Of Your Health” Ping List

This high volume ping list is for health articles and studies which describe something you or your doctor, when informed, may be able to immediately implement for your benefit.

Email me to get on either the “Common/Top Issues” (20 - 25% fewer pings) or “Everything” list.

This morning I made blackberry pancakes - yep Bisquick recipe calls for vegetable oil.

I almost always use olive oil but that just doesn’t work for pancakes.

Fasting always is an option, but some of us have blood sugar issues. If I did that, they’d be scooping me off the floor and onto a gurney.

Low carb worked for me once. Gonna try it again — after I’m done with this pizza for breakfast — LOL!

The lower A1c preceded the weight loss which at the time was ~7% higher than today. I aim for 25-50 net carbs for the day. Not sure about the BMI but I’m 6’1” and 195 lbs.

My personal go to resource for the diet wars regarding Keto is Dr. Ken Berry, who prefers “A Proper Human Diet”, to what is called a Keto diet, because the marketing people and the big food people are glomming on to that label, and selling all sorts of crap that isn’t at all good for us humans.

Much of what is labeled “Keto” is NOT Scottish! (some of you will get that joke)

Such as seed oils, processed foods, artificial sweeteners, etc.

Dr. Berry has a website, and is very active on YouTube. Any of you with health issues might want to watch and read what he has to say.

Dr. Berry is pretty much pro-Carnivore Diet.

“C57BL/6 male mice at 35 to 42 days old (or roughly 6 weeks) and weighting at least 15 grams were randomly assigned to either a control diet (17% calories from fat, 25% from protein, and 58% from carbohydrate) or a KD (90.5% calories from fat, 9.2% from protein, and 0.3% from carbohydrate) (Table 1) fed ad libitum and then euthanized after 7 or 21 days.”

Not sure how you get more BOGUS than that!

“ps...There’s more than one reason the government is keen to importing millions of working age people while simultaneously seemingly hellbent upon making us die sooner, but I chose not to write that book and paint a target on my back (and more than one reason I’m reluctant to publish my health books).”

But you consistently snark on virtually any health/nutrition-related article posted, while always mentioning your book-to-come...but ultimately deciding to withhold what you indicate are the keys to everyone’s health. What’s your point?

My point: Royalty $$ are not worth being ‘suicided’. It’s the same reason I’ve not run for office (besides being in enemy territory).

Ultimately, I’ve chosen to rewrite the book directed primarily at ND providers for their patients because...well, I’ll just state that the disillusionment from public outreach nearly prompted me to circular file it altogether. [Hint: Hypocrisy is the rule, not the exception.]

Go ahead and ridicule me for the ‘snark’, but I’m not wrong: The establishment WANTS us to be a diseased society. All the BS ‘grants’ funding research which they ‘choose’ to permit keeps people feeding at the trough ‘just enough’ to prevent pointing fingers.

Evidence: The compliance rate during the plandemic.

I’ve encountered some industry folks less than half my age of-late and, frankly, I’m convinced that I’ll long be room temperature before the public wakes up collectively, regardless my book status.

But hey, you don’t need me: Folks now have keto with an Ozempic back. ACES! /s

Yes there’s actually quite a number of ex-vegans who’ve come to the carnivore light. I’ve gone varying degrees of keto on and off since the days of Atkins, it always makes me feel better…but since I’ve cut out plants and gone carnivore, I feel amazing. As a bonus, my cholesterol, both LDL and HDL are through the roof! Triglycerides very low. They’ve been lying to us about cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. If you’re healthy, you have high cholesterol. Low cholesterol =unhealthy. No such thing as “good vs. bad” cholesterol.

Agreed. It SHOULD be a diabetic’s diet. But the American Diabetes Association lies to the diabetics, tells them to eat all kinds of grains and carbs, then shoot up with insulin.
