I'm at Seatac Airport (SEA) at the gate for my 10:00 A.M. flight LY9468 through Newark to Tel Aviv. I'm volunteering for the IDF through their organization "Sar-El". Usually, volunteers do warehousing work on base, live in the barracks, and eat with the soldiers.
I believe in transmogrification. For three weeks, I'm freeing up an 18-year-old Israeli kid with an M16 to go into Gaza and kill ham ass. I'm 62 and fit, and I can do the warehousing work that a soldier would otherwise have to do, and they can go to the front. Through the magic of transmogrification, I'm on the front lines of the fight for Western Civilization against the savage for 3 weeks.

They make this reasonably easy to accomplish. They have 1, 2 and 3 week programs. You have to get there, and arrange your own weekends, so it's not cheap.
There is a certain point in life where I cannot just flap my jaw and be a keyboard warrior. This is my time, and this is my way to do something concrete.
I'm arriving early, staying late, and have weekends off. I'll have lots of time to hang with the locals in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. My situational awareness is good, and the real threat level is relatively low (knives and car rammings are less frequent than shootings in Chicago!) It's my first trip to Israel, so it should be interesting.
Y'all keep the FReeper "allahu akhbar chorus" in line while I'm gone (they know who they are, and most of you do too). I'll be dark during the Israeli work week (Sun-Thu), as internet use is not allowed on base. I may check in on Friday or Saturday from the city. I'll do an after-action report on the plane back through Boston on June 10th, op sec being observed.

Wow - this is fantastic. I’m 61 and was advised I am too old to join the IDF and head to the front lines to some Hamas terrorists. Better me risk my life than young kids who have their whole lives ahead. But perhaps this is a good 2nd option.

Like you, I’m also in solid physical condition, about your age and can follow in the footsteps, that you are initiating. I’ll be researching this and checking my passport in the next couple of days.

Not concerned about clearance, because I’ve held us security clearance since 2002 (TMI beyond that) and a squeaky clean record.
Next step has already begun, as I’ve reached out to find someone to stay at my home. “Where God guides, God provides” in His perfect timing!

Be safe brother. While I suspect it to already true, serve with the humility which led you down His path. I suspect that one day you will weep quietly and ask Him; “How is it so Papa, that I went to serve You, yet You blessed me more than I blessed You?”. He does this, but isn’t about “self”. We cannot “out give” Him, so when it happens, let it rest and give it all back to Him. Just words of encouragement.
Those tears of humility will carry you for many years on your knees.

You’ll be very safe there. As you note, less street crime than you encounter in your average US city. Of course there are islamo fascists who occasionally rampage but those are everywhere and the Israelis are well prepared for them unlike US cities where we have crazed addicts roaming the streets.
Personally I would stay off the buses, though I think incidents have been rare since the last intifada and fewer suicide bombers since the borders have been mostly shut down.
Landed, Tel Aviv. Ensconced in AIRBNB in the Yemenite Quarter. Luggage catching up tomorrow, hopefully. Going to the market then walk the beach for sunset.
