No matter what I try, I can't get my screen background to be a black background. I'm 74 years old with cataracts and the white background just washes out the foreground text. Is there any way to make a dark background? No matter how I change my computer settings, Freerepublic still has a white background.
I use something called Dark Reader.

Me too, I often highlight by left clicking my mouse button, and drag the blue screen over the entire thread. It is irritating, but it helps my eyes.
I use Samsung’s default browser. Dark background on Freerepublic.com....
What browser are you using? There is an extension for Chrome called Dark Reader that can do it for you.
Added Dark Reader. Now to figure out how to use it. Thanks a bunch!
If you’re on a Windows machine, press CTRL and A together; it automatically highlights all the text. Came in handy when I had my eyes done. To the OP, Dark Reader is the way I go when needed.
Works like a champ. THANKS!
Use the Brave browser and select the Dark setting in Appearance. For desktop you can just create a solid black image sized 3840x2160 or whatever you have your display resolution set at.
In Brave for Android it’s called “Night Mode (experimental)”. Does work.
I see you’ve found a solution, but once more for old times sakes: Are you logged in?
:^)
On my devices, I can just highlight a word and then click select all when the pop-up pops up. Sometimes I have to hit the 3 dots at the end to get to select all, but it sure beats highlighting everything by hand!
Get your cataracts fixed. I did and it worked like a charm.
Just the lenses none of that fancy shirt.
It completely fixed my contrast problems.
Yes, the before and after is phenomenal. My only challenge is fixed lenses, needing glasses for anything under about six feet. I’ve ended up with computer and reading prescriptions, the computer also work good for shooting.
thank you...
wow cool, i didnt know that woudl do that- handy tip
RE: lens choice for cataract surgery
ImJustAnotherOkie, I’m wondering which focal length did you choose: near, intermediate or far?
How do the glasses needed for the other distances work out for you now?

Also, thanks to Reno89519 for explaining how this aspect of it works for you!
I ended up having two additional pair made, distance/computer, one clear and the other shaded so that I have both in the car for day or night so I can read the dash.
To be honest, I can read but it is fuzzy, and if it is small print closer than my arm/hand length, forget it. That's a bit frustrating to have to keep glasses handy for that, but worth it overall.
I AM VERY HAPPY WITH RESULTS OF SURGERY!
Thanks!
