Newly deciphered passages from a papyrus scroll that was buried beneath layers of volcanic ash after the AD79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius may have shed light on the final hours of Plato, a key figure in the history of western philosophy.
In a groundbreaking discovery, the ancient scroll was found to contain a previously unknown narrative detailing how the Greek philosopher spent his last evening, describing how he listened to music played on a flute by a Thracian slave girl.
Despite battling a fever and being on the brink of death, Plato – who was known as a disciple of Socrates and a mentor to Aristotle, and who died in Athens around 348BC – retained enough lucidity to critique the musician for her lack of rhythm, the account suggests.

Geez Louise, everybody’s a critic....
Plato should be cancelled for owning a slave girl.
Ping
True, but Plato himself was also a slave. So how does this work?

Yes indeed. I just reported him to my local TLM chapter.
TLM = Thracian Lives Matter
It’s all Greek to me.
Thracian slave girls were well known for other talents, oh yeah
He noted the slave girl’s lack of rhythm, one wonders what he’d have to say about modern time’s rap music or auto-tuned vocals.
he would probably appreciate them a lot more than the AI content drivel that is being created and then sold on amazon currently
So that's what they called them in those days.
He'd throw up like everyone else.
There are hundreds, if not thousands of these charred scrolls from the Roman houses around Vesuvius. I expect more and more to be deciphered as imaging and AI processing gets increasingly better.
A lot happened in Rome after the eruption, but there should still be quite a bit of Roman Republic and Greek writing rediscovered. Can’t wait!
At least we know she wasn’t black if she was without rhythm.
When Plato found out that he wasn’t a planet anymore life just wasn’t worth living ...
But Plato had been sold into slavery, then subsequently had he freedom bought back, decades before he listened to that slave girl (not sure he actually owned her, she might have been a loaner from a friend.)
The Thracians (people of Thrace, an area northeast of ancient Greece) were considered barbarous and warlike, but were notable for their red hair and blue eyes, and admired for their poetry and music.
Spartacus was a Thracian.
“died in Athens around 348BC – retained enough lucidity to critique the musician for her lack of rhythm”
I think the slave girl did him in by hitting him over the head with the flute.
She wasn't black so he gets a pass.
