I have not heard of ab insect infestation induced famine in the Jeffersonian era.

Total hyperbole, yes cicadas are annoying, but they just want to make whoopee, and then they burrow back into the ground.

I can hear it now... It’s a sign... It’s a sign.

I wonder if they said that during Jefferson’s time too.

It is because cicadas like this operate on prime number breeding schedules. This ensures that two different broods only emerge together during the cycle which is the least common multiple among the two groups. With prime numbers this is always both cycles multiplied together. With this it guarantees the least possible competition.

Scary then this are cicada wasps. Huge wasps that burrow in the ground and use cicadas for breeding vessels. Saw a field of them on a school playground a number of years ago. Spooky critters. I imagine they will increase in numbers when the cicada come out.

All hype. These two groups have separate habitats that don't overlap.

Normal hatchings in two different places.
