Total hyperbole, yes cicadas are annoying, but they just want to make whoopee, and then they burrow back into the ground.
Insectburgers!
If I see Yul Brenner in a tunic, then I’ll panic.
I can hear it now... It’s a sign... It’s a sign.
I wonder if they said that during Jefferson’s time too.
Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!
It is because cicadas like this operate on prime number breeding schedules. This ensures that two different broods only emerge together during the cycle which is the least common multiple among the two groups. With prime numbers this is always both cycles multiplied together. With this it guarantees the least possible competition.
Scary then this are cicada wasps. Huge wasps that burrow in the ground and use cicadas for breeding vessels. Saw a field of them on a school playground a number of years ago. Spooky critters. I imagine they will increase in numbers when the cicada come out.

I have tinnitus. For a couple of weeks during these infestations, I can tell people, welcome to my world.
Right now I have a June bug invasion. Turned on the porch lights and they are swarming.
Normal hatchings in two different places.
I’m thinking the geese, crows, and whatnot would go after them big time.
How in the world did they come up with the cicadas having STDs???!!!
Just trying to cause MORE fear in us???
Integral part of the longitudinal life cycles of many other creatures, whose boom and bust follows along with the food glut provided by the cicadas. Also, a respite year for species that would otherwise have been predated (plants & animals).
I know I’m braced.
I have been through these emergences several times. They’re all over the place and they are very noisy, and that’s about it. From the map I have seen, there is very little overlap, if any, between the two broods.
But to get in line with the spirit of the times, I offer this hopeful verse:
We’ll meet again,
Don’t know where,
Don’t know when.
But I know we’ll meet again
Some sunny day.
fry em up w S&P and g powder
Just think: if those trillion cicadas brought just a dollar each, they could pay for 0’Biden’s spending for a couple months.
They don't eat anything after they surface, and after they mate and lay eggs, they die.
Oh noes.....glow bull warming caused by burning “falsely” fuels may interrupt the cycle. How dare we?!
