Some Apple Vision Pro users suffer black eyes, headaches and neck pain

Some Apple Vision Pro users are finding that the virtual-reality headset isn’t so easy on the eyes, after all.

Emily Olman got her $3,500 device in February and told MarketWatch that it gave her two black eyes after she wore it for the first time for about an hour.

“I wasn’t able to use it very much the first few weeks because the fit was just off,” said Olman, chief media officer at Hopscotch Interactive, who is based in Kensington, Calif. Olman creates videos with the device for commercial and residential real-estate clients.

She added that she had “like, superdark black eyes,” after wearing the Apple Vision Pro, which, she said, “clearly [placed] too much weight on my cheeks.”

Olman is not the only user pained by Apple’s new VR device. Ian Beacraft, CEO of consulting firm Signal and Cipher, felt soreness at the base of his skull and in his upper back after a two-hour session, he said in an interview. He blamed the fit of the Apple gadget.

Apple Inc.’s AAPL, +4.33% Vision Pro is generating oohs and aahs — and black eyes and other maladies — among early adopters of the heralded mixed-reality headset. While it may have been well-reviewed, the high-tech wearable comes with an important caveat: Wearing it for extended periods of time — more than an hour or so — risks neck pain, headaches, eye strain and back aches, according to users of the device and Apple literature. Some users have taken to social-media sites such as Reddit to grouse about other side effects, like puffy or dry eyes, in addition to dark under-eye circles resembling black eyes.

Apple directed MarketWatch to its user guidelines but provided no formal comment.

Guess I will go back to using the old Optigrab I have had in the drawer since 1979. I sent a letter to Steve Martin abut compensation, but never heard back.

So other users and Apple warn not to use the devise more than an hour or unpleasant side effects will happen, but users who use it for more than an hour complain that they are suffering unpleasant side effects?

Those whining users may have a lot of money, but they ain’t so bright.

The VR headset that I purchased, the Meta Quest 2 is currently selling for $199. In our state it costs over 50% less than the sales tax on the Apple Vision Pro. Despite being bulkier than the Apple device it hasn’t given me any black eyes, but depending on what it is being used for it can cause a bit of nausea. It is difficult to wear glasses and put it on, but the way that the optics work I do not need to wear my glasses with them.

For the price it does provide some very unique experiences. It has 1832 x 1920 Resolution Per Eye. with 60, 72, 90 Hz Refresh Rate. The Apple has 3,391 x 3,391 Resolution Per Eye with the same refresh rates. I do not sense much if any pixelation while wearing them depending on what they are being used for.

I use it mostly for flight simulators. The aircraft in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and X-plane 11 and 12 have extremely realistic interiors and when you are wearing the headset it looks and feels a lot like you are actually flying an airplane. You can look out the windows and easily keep track of the position of the airports to help with flying a proper pattern. Neither of these flight simulators are currently compatible with the Apple Vision Pro that I know of.

So other users and Apple warn not to use the devise more than an hour or unpleasant side effects will happen, but users who use it for more than an hour complain that they are suffering unpleasant side effects?

Once you get used to VR goggles most people can wear them a lot longer than an hour without any unpleasant side effects. I doubt that few if any "other users" are telling people anything other than to limit their usage until they get used to them but I am sure that there are many who will never have the chutzpa to pay their dues. In our society any level or form of discomfort is considered to much too bear by many people.

I consider this warning to be like so many others written by lawyers to legally protect the company not the users. Most people recognize these warnings for what they actually are and this has nothing to do with their level of intelligence.

AAPL’s head set is not like other VR headsets, and the warnings are not legalese, but real. Disregard at your own peril.

I researched this a bit since posting. Others are working on ways to get existing simulators to work with them.
