Surprise hotel cancellations in Buffalo, New York, darkened dozens of visitors’ eclipse-viewing plans, ending their stays in one of the prime viewing spots for the April 8 solar eclipse before they even began. Multiple would-be guests told WIVB that their plans to stay at Buffalo’s Aloft hotel were abruptly canceled just one week before their planned trip due to overbooking by travel agencies and third-party sites like Booking.com. Some of the travelers had made their reservations up to two years before the planned visit, when they first learned that Buffalo would be in the path of the eclipse, a New Jersey travel agency said. Patricia Paterson, who planned a reunion with her siblings around the eclipse, described the cancellation as “infuriating” and suspected the hotel was trying to price-gouge because of the unusual tourism boost. “They can make a big buck for what they’re charging for one night about what we had booked for a three night stay,” she said.

Yes, the hype over the top.
My next door neighbor has invited us to view the eclipse with her family in her driveway. It’ll be a small but fun party, and we only have to walk over there. I’m trying to concoct an eclipse drink for the event. We will see what I can come up with. Suggestions welcome.
She’s offering Coronas and Blue Moon beer but I don’t drink beer.
I saw the 2017 total eclipse, and it was insane. It was just for a few minutes of viewing, and afterward all the roads out of town were jammed. It took hours just to advance one mile down the road.
“Eclipse Travelers Outraged Over Last-Minute Hotel Cancellations”
Ah. First world problems. Life can be hard at times. :-)
The hotel guests who got cancelled don’t get a reverse cancellation fee from the hotel either. Price gouging is what it is. Guests that secure an agreed upon reservation with stated price and secure it with a credit card hold should not be bumped because hotels decide they can make more profits afterwards.
This eclipse has an added bonus: a comet might also be visible. Prices for hotels are going up and up and up. No wonder hotels are canceling reservations when they can sell the same room for a whole lot more .
Some cocktail options for you:
Solar Flare Margarita: A twist on the classic margarita with orange juice and a splash of grenadine to mimic the colors of a solar eclipse. Serve in a salt-rimmed glass.
Lunar Eclipse: A layered cocktail with black vodka over cranberry juice, topped with a layer of peach schnapps and a dash of lime for a gradient effect resembling a lunar eclipse.
Total Eclipse: A dark, mysterious cocktail made with black rum, crème de cassis, and lemon juice, topped with club soda and a slice of star fruit for garnish.
Eclipse Spritz: A refreshing spritz made with Aperol, prosecco, and a splash of cola to darken the hue, garnished with an orange slice, symbolizing the sun.
Shadow and Light: A cocktail that plays with the contrast of flavors and colors, using activated charcoal for the shadow (darkness) and coconut cream for the light, mixed with vodka and pineapple juice for a tropical taste.
I drove Sons from Denver to Wyoming to see that one. Took over 12 hours to get home.
Glad I got a rental car.
She likes you as a neighbor, correct?
10 to one that folks made a call to Schumer...and done deal...you got cancelled. Fair?? Schumer doesn’t know the meaning of the word.
One of my friends was trying to describe his neighbor’s eclipse margarita recipe. I said it sounds like “drink tequila until everything goes dark”.
Cute comeback.
My wife and I drove from southern Arizona to eastern Oregon for the 2017 eclipse. Crazy traffic both ways, but we camped out in the Malheur NF, so no hotel worries.
Sorry, but what is “Malheur NF”?
The Malheur National Forest. My apologies for not spelling out the abbreviation, but I was being lazy.
First world problems…
Probably spelled out in the fine print, and why I stopped using those sites. Bait and switch
