On April 2, 2024, the claim that "only 1.6% of US citizens owned slaves in 1860" went viral on X (formerly Twitter):
Though the 3.3 million people who viewed this statement (at the time of this reporting) may not be aware, this claim is part of an long-standing genre of online memes that use a misleading statistic to minimize the importance of slavery to antebellum America.
The actual percentage reported in these memes varies, Snopes has observed, from 1.3 percent to the present 1.6 percent. As Snopes reported in August 2019, the statistic to which these memes refer is most accurately conveyed as 1.4 percent.......
The year 1860 was a census year. Officials collected detailed information on slave ownership and distribution in the Southern states, and this data, while far from perfect, is likely the most reliable source of information for the state of slavery directly preceding the Civil War......
Adam Rothman, a historian at Georgetown University and an expert in the history of slavery who spoke to us via email, told us that the percentage of slaveholding families is "the better measure of the extent of slaveholding." One reason this is true, according to historian Adam Goodheart in an interview with Politifact in August 2017, is that a person could be (and often was) a "slave master" but not technically a "slave owner":
"Many non-slaveholding whites in the South rented slaves from wealthier slaveholders ... so it was very common for a white Southerner to be a 'slave master' but not technically a 'slave owner.'"

I also heard there were black slave owners, but can't recall ever seeing evidence. Of course as usual there is not mention of who actually enslaved and sold slaves for shipment to America.
This article seems to be jumping through all kinds of hoops and playing with word definitions just so that it can “fact check” and prove that all white people are super bad.
Snopes?
Nope.
Snopes - a man, cat, and woman he left his wife for, operating from their basement.
Sine rented slaves. But whatever the numbers, you pretty much have to use the one drop rule to find anybody with a historical connection to slavery.
We did a plantation tour in Louisiana last year. Very interesting history and facts were presented that we never were taught in school. This particular plantation’s architect was a free black man who was also a slave owner. He was not the plantation owner.
So I will attest to the statement that there were free blacks that were also slave owners.
snopes should be banned from FR ... snopes is a super-hard-core leftist propaganda organ ...
I would like to know how many were actually abused. One of my best friends was beaten by her father...and we’re talking a little white girl from a good family in the days when whipping /spanking was still tolerated. I’m talking the 1950s. Our country wasn’t always rich...and whitey did more than their fair share.
There were not only black slave owners there weee black slave traders as well.
And there was zero chance newrly 10% of whites owned or even “mastered” black slaves.
Snopes is full if excrement for making such claims
African American Owners of Enslaved Persons in Kentucky
...A History of World Societies documents a total of 6,000 Negro slave owners in the U.S. for the year 1840 [p. 846]. The 1850 and 1860 Slave Schedules do not identify slave owners by race; the individual names of slave owners must be searched in the U.S. Federal Census to identify the individual's race...
Snopes lies again.
BKMK
So if you're non-black and live in the U.S., you owe reparations.
“Southerner.”
Ahem.
Delaware was the LAST state to abolish slavery.
Both DE and Maryland were slave-states DURING the war against northern aggression; Massa Lincoln had them slaves loading up federal trains while the boys in blue fought against the pellagra-ridden illiterate southern slave owners fighting for the same rights their grandfathers did in 1775-1783.
Right? Right.
Snopes=Libturdian BS and propaganda.
The FIRST chattel slave owned was a Black ex-slave named Anthony Johnson. He had an indentured servant named Castor. After Castor’s time as an indentured servant was over Castor left Johnson’s plantation. Johnson retrieved him and went to court. The court ruled Castor was owned by Johnson. Many slaves had side gigs. I have two books by a history professor from Augusts college about Augusta Ga during the Antebellum period and just after. Slaves also rented themselves out and owned businesses. Many were able to gain enough money to buy their freedom. In Augusta slaves could sell goods and food they grew or made but could not own a “brick and mortar” building or rent building space. So with a wink and node the slaves hired a white proprietor.
You should be banned.
I know this claim is made, over and over. But most of the "wealth" built up with slave labor was destroyed during the Civil War.
When you look at the Capital accumulated in the South, most of it was in the form of slaves. So, if you claim the wealth of the USA was created by slave labor, you are saying the wealth of the USA existed in its black population.
After the War Between the States, the black population only did a little more than feed itself.
Some more, but not huge.
I once read about a major black slave owner in the South. Winds up that he was one of the nastiest in history towards his slaves, and yes, obviously, the treatment of slaves varied GREATLY from owner to owner.
If you go back to the 16th-17th century, the whole world pretty much had slavery of all races (slavery-Slavic). Thus everyone owes reparations, so it is a zero sum game. Also, white societies were the ones that stopped slavery before the other racial societies. In fact, there is still slavery in parts of Africa, the Middle East and Asia. This whole issue is designed to create friction, not solve anything.
Bottom line is, there is NO RACE on earth that has not been held as slaves at some point. Also there is no race on earth that has not held slaves. To this day, there are slaves being held all over the world, but not here unless you count diddys sex slaves.
