In yet another move that feels designed to tick off long time fans while boosting the returns for short term investors, the San Francisco Giants announced this morning that effective this season, fans ages 17 and under will no longer be permitted to attend games at Oracle Park. Yes, the move is surprising, because Baseball is a kids’ game and the sport has always been a draw for families, but some stark market realities have influenced the decision.
On the condition of anonymity, I exchanged some texts with an unnamed exec in the Giants front office, who had this to say about the move:
The biggest complaint we receive every year is that families are struggling to afford attending games, between our FMV [fair market value] tix, concessions, and parking. We’ve seen that impact walkup business and in park spending before, during, and after games. So we are shifting focus to a sector of the market that has less difficulties.
This is one of the clearest signs that the Giants have jumped into this decision with both eyes opened and fully informed. Unlike some of their other actions this offseason, it’s an explanation, and we don’t have to question the wisdom in it. The team is a moneymaking business and they are simply adjusting to the fact that 17 and unders don’t make them as much money. I asked if there was any concern about losing future generations of fans by preventing them from attending games in person.

wow. I hope it really backfires on them.
That seems short sighted.
Nice April Fool’s post - but Oracle Park might be the only halfway child-friendly place left in San Francisco. :)
Yep, April Fool’s. Read to the bottom of the MSN article.
“I asked if there was any concern about losing future generations of fans by preventing them from attending games in person.”
Future? You mean beyond the next quarter? Nope. US corporations care not one bit.
This only makes business sense if every game is a sellout, thousands are turned away every game, and it is expected to remain that way for a long time. It is one more sign of the anti-family, anti-little guy trend that the left is promoting.
But I’m sure they were very welcome at SF Transgender Visibility Day celebration.
God is not mocked.
I’m glad I saw your post. I was going to tell people at the local watering hole about it.
I predict this will be a long thread due to people who don’t read the article or the first 4-5 replies.
I had to look three times to make sure this wasn’t the bee. This is an incredibly stupid decision.
OK I stand corrected. They got me :-)
You almost got me....................
Read to the bottom? Never I say!!!! This is actually great satire as NBA and NFL have effectively banned kids through high prices and catering to drunken man-children to whom no sane parent would expose his children.
Given that it's SF we're talking about, they really should have a Grinder Park.
It’s not clear which part the April Fool’s referenced.
Really? Like Marbles and Jacks?
Writer is an imbecile.
April fools post
An 8 year-old (boy, especially) who watches his favorite player, on his favorite team, will be a fan for life.
In sum, they’ve stopped investing in new fans
also, its incredibly insulting to families.
Makes ZERO sense to me, but what do I know?
Perfect April Fools joke by Murph. It plays really well with the coverage the Giants have been getting lately.
Since Al Davis died and the Raiders moved away, the Bay Area sports media has turned their ire towards the A’s and Giants. The Giants hatred is due to the largest shareholder, Charles Johnson, being MAGA.
