Increasing numbers of Generation Z are opting out of college and turning to vocational schools with hopes of higher wages and avoiding student debt, data shows.
Young people who came of age during the pandemic said they have been deterred from four-year universities by high tuition and the prospect of student debt.
Instead, they are attending trade schools and are being enticed by well-paying job opportunities and satisfying work.
The National Student Clearing House recorded a 16 percent increase in enrollment at two-year schools with a 'high vocational program focus' and a 2.6 percent rise in community college enrollment in 2023, reported Bloomberg.
'It's a really smart route for kids who want to find something and aren't gung ho on going to college,' wielding program graduate Tanner Burgess, 20, told The Wall Street Journal.
'It feels good at the end of the day, I'm physically doing something and there's a sense of completion.'
There was a 23 percent increase in students studying construction trades in 2023 compared to the year before, and a seven percent increase in HVAC and vehicle maintenance and repair programs.

We’ve had to have a lot of work done lately due to storm damage - it seems every crew has at least one senior person and 1-2 younger apprentices. I’m happy to see that.
i hope that continues- aroudn here- the older plumbers in town, one just died- and not replaced, and the other is still working, but hasn’t had any younger people working with him- so it looks like the town will be without one soon- Carpenters is another story- plenty of them- old and young- the one mechanic is gettign set to retire, he has a younger person working for him, but he won’t have enough $$ to buy him out so he’ll probably move on-
Gen-X needs to support this break back to skills vs education. Hire, fund, and deal with those who choose skills over an indoctrination education. I do that in my small team of hiring. Hired a guy that just got out of the navy after an unproductive first 2 years in college. He has been a great pick up. No one would touch him because his first 2 years pulled his GPA low overall. I jumped on a guy that grew up in the mil before picking back up his desire to get his engineering degree. Great choice.
We have 10 years where Gen -X can make some changes. If you have that opportunity the take the chance.
Whatever will the “perfessers” of imaginary disciplines do if they cannot harvest the student loan dollars of dumb 18-year olds?
And their heads won’t get filled with a bunch of BS.
At least, if he’s smart, he has young employees rolling around under houses straining their backs.
“there’s a sense of completion.”
very import, i spent years on projects that we were only part of and never saw completion of anything, just slotted into the next project when the handoff was done and it can be frustrating
seeing immediate results is very satisfying
GenZ better move quick.
30,000,000 illegals will
be competing for any
available trade jobs.
Especially in the
co struction trades.
If true, this is AWESOME! Screw the colleges. Screw the pinkos! Screw the crazies left-wing lunatics!
Only Engineering, medical and scientific; degrees need to be in college. Tue rest is BS.
They are also taking up appliance and small engine repair and other such hands-on tech trades. For years, people tossed items such as lawn mowers and appliances and purchased new ones (they now only last a few years), but with the economy, people are looking to repair those items in order to save money. Our local tech school and its four satellite campuses is reporting record enrollment.
Good. We need more in the skilled trades AND they don’t get marxist indoctrination when learning these trades.
Recent Tucker interview of Mike Rowe is very entertaining. https://rumble.com/v4m53p2-the-tucker-carlson-encounter-mike-rowe.html
Good for them!
Yeh, no panacea. Working and sweating outside, or freezing to earn a living. Ok, for some.
There is no good argument FOR open borders RINO man.
“Gen-Z is shunning college to take up traditional trades like welding and plumbing they say is far MORE SATISFYING ... “
Reminds me of Peter Gibbons holding his shovel saying, “F**king A”.
Thanks! Watching it now.
(probably) Approves.
“..DEI made Colleges irrelevant....”
DEI is just the symptom.
The real culprit is the Leftest/Global/Homo/Marxist bunch that seems to have pretty much taken over the country.
