The jobs board for the American Climate Corps is set to officially launch in April, and it’s likely to be flooded with eager applicants. Since President Biden announced the New Deal-inspired program in September, more than 50,000 people have expressed interest in joining.
“I think the idea is to make it as broad as possible so all young people can find something, whether they’re at a 7th-grade reading level and they’re coming out of the foster care or juvenile justice system, or whether they’re a PhD candidate at a university,” said Mary Ellen Sprenkel, president and CEO of The Corps Network. Her association represents 150 corps, including AmeriCorps, that will host many of the ACC projects.
Funding for the Climate Corps projects is subject to Biden’s Justice40 Initiative, an executive order requiring at least 40% of the benefits from certain federal programs to go toward disadvantaged communities. “So there will be an emphasis to support project work in environmental justice communities and underserved communities, and enroll young people from those populations,” Sprenkel said.
Though the Climate Corps will be small at launch, the plan is to expand it to 20,000 jobs within its first year. The longer term goal is more lofty: Biden wants $8 billion from Congress to scale the corps and add 50,000 new roles each year through 2031.
He’s unlikely to get that, though. The program has faced sharp opposition from some Republicans who have labeled it “woke” and “radical.” At least one wants to ban it, even though polling suggests a large majority of likely voters (including 58% of Republicans) support a climate corps.

The “Climate Corps” is nothing other than the taxpayers paying for a political program embedding in the government.
If the Democrats want a “Climate Corps” they can pay for it out of their own coffers and it can’t be part of the government nor can it be imposed on any person or enterprise outside of the government.
