Two people were hospitalized after being attacked by a bear in Slovakia, officials reported Sunday. The Environment Ministry may propose making the animals easier to hunt to reduce their population.
A 49-year-old woman suffered a wound to her shoulder and a 72-year-old man was treated for a gash on his hand from the bear in the town of Liptovsky Mikuláš, emergency services said.
Police drove the bear out of town..
A day prior to the latest attack, a 31-year-old Belarussian woman apparently fell to her death trying to escape a brown bear in the nearby Low Tatra mountains.
She and a male companion had been walking in the thickly forested area when the bear approached them.
The man and woman fled in different directions. A rescue dog found the victim's body shortly after the male hiker called authorities for help.
There have been several relatively recent bear attacks in Slovakia including a fatal one in 2021. The country had not reported a lethal bear attack in more than a century.
Improved protections in Central and Eastern Europe have meant bears have returned to their natural habitats across the Carpathian mountain range, which stretches from Romania through western Ukraine and to Slovakia and Poland.
The uptick in human-bear interactions has prompted the Environment Ministry to consider calling on the European Union to loosen protections for bears, making it easier to hunt them in an attempt to reduce their numbers and lower the threat of such encounters.
The ministry has said it may revisit the bears' status on the protected species list, arguing their increasing numbers mean they are no longer endangered and can be selectively hunted, culling the herds.
Watch out for those Belarussian Bears, especially the Mama Belarussian Bears with their Baby Bears. Brutal.
Just like that movie “The Reverant”.
I meant to say “The Revenant”.
“Police drove the bear out of town.”
That should teach that bear. “And don’t you EVER come back!”
I hope they gave the bear a comfy limo ride.

No wonder they have increased human-bear conflict since they apparently have “herds” of these “endangered” Ursidae!
I’ve started packing a sidearm when I’m outside the house here in the Cabinet Mountains of NW Montana. The weather is nice enough that I know the bruins are awakening. I wonder if the Slovakian brown bears are related to North American “brown bears” aka grizzlies.
I always carry a 44 mag when walking in the woods. Always.
In 2014, a Russian man, Sergey Grigoriyev, adopted and raised a bear cub. .. Despite four years of bonding, the bear ate Sergey.. His “skeletal remains” were found by Police who went to his house after his relatives reported him missing
We have protected bears for so long here in Florida we are now up to our ears in bears...............
We tried that in Florida.
Doesn’t work.
Nuisance bears were taken up to 500 miles from where they were captured and they come back ‘home’.
Now they just euthanize them....................
We Americans are a gun culture, unlike most other cultures in the world. So, when you go into the woods and don’t carry a sufficient bear deterrent (firearm), you’re a damned fool. All bears will eat you but brown bears are just ill-tempered!
Bear attacks way up all over the world. The best protection is a magnum handgun.
I was overrun by squirrels eating all the fruit on my ten fruit trees. I finally decided “that’s enough” and decided to do something about it. I bought a Hav-a-Hart trap and caught my first squirrel. Put the cage in the car and drove him ten miles up in the hills, the distance they say they cannot find their way back.
That was about $5 to “save” one rodent. Then I learned the existing rodents in the new area don’t like the newcomers and the newcomers frequently starved or died shortly.
So my next 74 catches went for a swim in a big bucket of water. I finally got to eat my fruit.
Just think of what Rambo did after the cops drove him out of town !
I give the squirrels a swimming lesson too. I’m still overrun with those tree rats.
After getting rid of 75, things quieted down a LOT.
I was thinking of that first(?) Rambo movie.
Reminds me of all those old FAR SIDE cartoons in the newspaper.
