Reasons Why American Idol Might Be Fake
Nicki Swift ^ | 5/7/19 | Stassi Reid

The nation became hooked on American Idol when it made its debut on Fox in 2002. The singing competition featured an array of talented entertainers ... as well as a few contestants who definitely could've used some voice lessons. Either way, we fell in love with the winners, from Kelly Clarkson, to Fantasia Barrino, to Carrie Underwood. Even a few of the runner-ups won us over, as well (hello, Clay Aiken!).

But over time, something shady started to happen. The show — which appeared to be so authentic when it first aired — took a weird turn. Suddenly, we weren't entirely sure that the competition wasn't staged and the votes weren't rigged. Why were we so skeptical?

Intel from former contestants and anonymous sources points toward the show being rigged. Along with the show's reboot in 2018, which included a drastically different judging format, it's safe to say that American Idol might be totally fake. Don't believe us? Here are all the reasons why.

Morey Amsterdam, Buddy Sorrell on the Dick Van Dyke Show wasn’t even given a script. The scripts had a section labeled “Buddy tells jokes, 30 seconds)

It was rigged from the start. The executive producer leaked to his close circle of friends Kelly Clarkson would be winning. I know one of those friends, so I knew, too.

I have never seen it. It would be awfully hard to beat the Gong Show.

Reminds me of the Payola scandals of the 1950s.

When American Idol first started, it was a breath of fresh air on TV.

Ted Mac not impressed.

Was he the guy from the backwoods of Missouri who thought Truman was still President in the late 1950s? If so, I remember that!

Now it is a staged woke Hollyweird production.

When the judges swoon over a trans singer with a lousy voice, you know it's woke.

The reason I stopped watching it was the way they portrayed every singer’s past as tragedy. “They’ve had so much to overcome that it is a miracle they are even here.” Vote out of pity. That was nauseating.

It's still like that, last night the Large Black girl was competing for her 3 brothers who have eyesight problems.....

Of course the show is rigged. The point of the show isn’t the competition, it’s making mimeographed popstars for the label. Every they send to LA gets a record contract with whichever label is associated (I can’t keep track). EVERYBODY. And if the label detects enough of a following for the money they’ll send them into the studio. Now there probably is legit voting since that’s useful info for the label, but whether that legit voting is the results they say on TV, who knows. But yes, it’s been quite openly rigged pretty much from day 1.

I watched the first several seasons and really enjoyed it. Stopped watching after Simon left. So You Think You Can Dance went about the same way. Really good the first several seasons and then completely unwatchable.

I saw part of only one show, which amazingly had the “Pants on the Ground” song mentioned in the article. It was catchy and funny. “Pants on the ground. Pants on the ground. Looking like a fool with your pants on the ground.”

The producers of 'The Gong Show' knew back in the 1970s that audiences didn't care to watch amateur talent but would watch outlandish events, even failures.

American Idol is no different.

Thanks. She definitely has some chops, not quite as good as Houston, but very close, which is still amazingly good. But as you say, it is completely disingenuous to put her out there as a potential new rising star, when she’s ~40 years old and already professional in Europe.

We saw some great new singers on AI at first, but some were getting pretty bad about half way through when I quit watching. One of the songs that got repeatedly sung was “I who have nothing” but none did it better than Jordin Sparks (who went on to win that year).

If you like Glennis I’m guessing you’ll like that one pretty well. Cheers!
