Those Big Steel Beasts Of War Have Got to Roll
A Tribute To America’s Tankers
It’s o-dark thirty and Top is calling roll Miss the formation and you’ll wish you were in a hole Walk police call without any badges or phones Buff the floor and paint all the stones Those big steel beasts of war have got to roll
Have another dip in the cement motor pool lads Hollywood doesn’t make movies about changing track pads Check the filters, check the lights and put oil in little jars There’s no drinks to be had at the torsion bars Those big steel beasts of war have got to roll
We had hot chow and then we had a PCI The Lieutenant ordered us all not to die Throw her in gear let off the brake and hit the gas Miss the SP and the Captain will have your ass Those big steel beasts of war have got to roll
The road is always gritty sand or it is mud You grease the tracks with your sweat and blood It’s echelon left or it’s echelon right Sure as hell there’s going to be a big fight Those big steel beasts of war have got to roll
The gunner’s firing sabot and he’s firing HEAT You don’t have time to sleep or eat There’s mines and missiles and drones And a healthy apprehension all through your bones Those big steel beasts of war have got to roll Those big steel beasts of death have got to roll

Fix it if you can.
Sounds like rap you figure it out
The ones the UK built sunk in the mud over there.
Are these lyrics you wrote?
I think it was produced by that new technology- AU
Artificial Unintelligible.
First time I’ve seen a post by you. Had to go back look at
your home page and some of your posting.
I will say this...... I’d bet you are a very nice person and
can make a person laugh until he/she hurts. Take care and
have a nice one.
Call it a puzzler. (Notice what I just did? It’s called “punctuation”. Give it a whirl).
I like it. Takes me back to 1991 in Saudi when we kicked off in Desert Storm.
Tanks, like manned fighters and ships of war, are becoming obsolete, and more and more just big juicy targets for drones.
Takes me back to late 70s and Reforger exercises in BRD.
LOL
“The gunner’s firing sabot and he’s firing HEAT...” Much more exciting when The gunner’s firing sabot and he’s “Indexed” HEAT...
Cheers!
REFORGER '77, great memories, despite my Jeep getting crunched by an M-60, with me in it. It was much more exciting than air base defense.
I never saw the light of day during Air Force or NATO alerts, I spent the entire time in the Wing CP at Hahn AB, as the Army Liasion Officer. And I heard all the jokes about Second Lieutenants. Unless you're a fighter pilot, butterbars were not to be heard from or seen.
I upset that narrative on my first alert. An NBC input was dropped, so they called in their "expert", a Captain. He was so intimidated by the 5 bird colonels, he overreacted. I was there in the Eagles Nest, briefing the Wing Cdr where our gun and missile units were located.
Before the Wing Cdr gave his order, I jumped in, "may I make a recommendation, Colonel?" I gave him 3 reasons why they didn't need to increase the alert level. He agreed with me, as did the NATO Team Chief.
15 minutes later, I heard his voice boom out, "as long as I'm in command, I want that Army LT up here whenever there's an NBC input." So it went for another 15 months.
Tanks?
Motor pool?
Why cement? I think cement is on bases and roads.
But the tanks roll everywhere
Anyway the fun is in the mystery. Nice work.
There are a couple of recent articles in The Army Times about how Tankers are killing themselves at a rate three times higher than any other career field in the US Army.
That hurt me deep down.
I wanted to write something that would maybe make my fellow Tankers feel a bit better. There are others who have rode those Big Steel Beasts of War and moved on OK.
What I wrote was supposed to come out like a poem. The breaks didn’t come out in the final product. I didn’t get the punctuation in because I wrote it ad lib.
I tried to do something good for my fellow Tankers, and I ended up screwing the pooch. That’s about par for me lately.
I apologize to my fellow holders of The Golden Spurs.
God, how I miss standing up in the TC’s hatch.
Just a tip. 🙂
But don't worry, we all think our statements are being understood. No big deal. 🙂
I assumed that was what I might be looking at, but wasn't certain at all. 🙂
Very nice poem, BTW. 🙂
Nailed it.
I had to go see who this goofball was and my eyes are still watering. LMAO
ya done good...
