Let Erin remember the days of old,
Ere her faithless sons betrayed her.
When Malachi wore the collar of gold,
Which he won from her proud invader,
When her kings with standards of green unfurled
Led the Red-Branch Knights to danger,
Ere the emerald gem of the western world,
was set in the crown of a stranger.
On Lough Neagh's bank as the fisherman strays
When the clear cold eve's declining,
He sees the round towers of other days,
In the wave beneath him shining.
Thus shall memory often in dreams sublime,
Catch a glimpse of the days that are over,
Thus, sighing, look through the waves of time
For the long-faded glories they cover
Malachi, by tradition, a 9th century Irish king who, defeating one Viking invader, took his gold collar, and another, took his sword. About Loch Neagh, in Moore’s time, it was believed there had been a settlement in a deep dell, which was suddenly and permanently flooded, so that fishermen could later see the battlements of a building down in the water.
Erin Go Bragh
Thank you for the appropriate post.
Ping! Thank you for this!
My hubby back many years ago would say Erin go braless…. Okay it was in the 1970’s and it was funny then.
Still funny to me and many others. Sadly, many who go braless these days shouldn’t.
We laughed our tushis off at that show.
As a member of the Collins family that gave us Michael I am so ashamed of the weenies in Ireland. They fought the Brits for hundreds of years to practice their Catholic faith and now have given it up in 100 years. In the end the Brits won anyway. The Irish has sold the soul of their country to be one of the “cool kids” of Europe. Abortion gay marriage a Muslim government and a flood of illegal aliens is their prize.
May God have mercy on Ireland.
Saint Patrick, pray for Erie.
Does the U.S. learn from their tragedy? NOOOooooo.
