I've done a lot of family research in my day...spending time at several state capitals and at a nearby Federal Archives office. At the Archives office they have things like US Census records (detailed,official records) and shipping manifests (to show who was on a particular migrant vessel arriving from Europe).

The Census records I saw (late 1800s/early 1900s) all had a column where the person was asked to give the birthplace and citizenship of all occupants of the house.
