While Germany and Austria were the first countries to use DST in 1916, it is a little-known fact that a few hundred Canadians beat the German Empire by eight years. On July 1, 1908, the residents of Port Arthur, Ontario—today's Thunder Bay—turned their clocks forward by one hour to start the world's first DST period...
...Germany introduced DST in 1916. Clocks in the German Empire, and its ally Austria, were turned ahead by one hour on April 30, 1916—two years into World War I. The rationale was to minimize the use of artificial lighting to save fuel for the war effort.
Within a few weeks, the United Kingdom, France, and many other countries followed the idea. Most of them reverted to standard time after World War I, and it wasn’t until the next World War that DST made its return in most of Europe.
If you think Daylight Saving Time is a good idea, you can thank New Zealand scientist George Vernon Hudson and British builder William Willett. In 1895, Hudson presented a paper to the Wellington Philosophical Society, proposing a 2-hour shift forward in October and a 2-hour shift back in March...
Many sources also credit Benjamin Franklin for being the first to suggest seasonal time change. However, the idea voiced by the American inventor and politician in 1784 can hardly be described as fundamental for the development of modern DST. After all, it did not even involve turning the clocks. In a letter to the editor of the Journal of Paris, entitled "An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light," Franklin simply suggested that Parisians could economize candle usage by getting people out of bed earlier in the morning. What's more: Franklin meant it as a joke.

My husband hates it too; he thinks they should pick one and stick to it.
I love DST...
I’m in Arizona. Doesn’t affect me in the least.
I live in a state that has Standard time year round.
I have lived Northern and Southern states that use Daylight savings.
I think Daylights savings is BS.
The sun appears in the East and disappears into the West.
That is my natural time clock.
We have a different clock system to better coordinate non-natural human activities, that is fine. However, I think humans function better when they stick to natural events.
Yoy laugh but I’ve now got container after container of Daylight that I’ve collected for decades
Step 1) Save Daylight
Step 2) ???
Step 3) Profit!!
I hate, loathe, and abominate DST; have done since I was a child! My body just never adjusts to the time change. Hell, it took me YEARS to get used to the time change, when we moved to Chicago, from NYC and I felt better when we moved back to the East Cost, many years later!
SPOT ON!
Kitty cat wakes me up just before dawn regardless of the time on the clock.
They don’t use DST on the East Coast? I thought only AZ was smart enough to say no to it.
I forgot that the time switches tonight. Funny that I have not seen any reminders anywhere. Not even my local TV station has a reminder.
I forgot this year too, and I usually don’t. I knew it was coming up but didn’t realize it was tonight until someone happened to mention it to me a little earlier this evening.
Ergo, when it is 6:00 PM in NYC, its 5:00PM in Chicago. So T.V. shows are on an hour earlier there, than in NYC. And yes, the day and night times are different. Nobody notices such things IF they never move away from the time zone they were born in. OTOH, people who are sensitive to time changes DO notice.
Ah.
” thought only AZ was smart enough to say no to it.”
Hawaii as well, not that they matter.
I have a house in both places, so never having to re- figure the time difference makes it easy on an olde farte like me.
In one of the only worthwhile things he has done Rubio proposed getting rid of it. What happened to that one great idea he has ever had?
It didn’t survive.
