A New Mexico jury found “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed guilty of involuntary manslaughter, Wednesday.
She was found not guilty of tampering with evidence, according to NBC News. The jurors deliberated for about two and a half hours before reaching their verdict. The 26-year-old will now face up to 18 years of prison, to be determined at an as-yet unscheduled sentencing hearing. The judge ordered that Gutierrez-Reed be taken into custody immediately, where she will be held until her sentencing, according to NBC News.
Juror Albert Sanchez said “pretty much not checking the weapons” was the major factor that led him to make his decision in the Gutierrez-Reed case.
“Just handing them over, like ‘here.’ Not checking — that was a big deal,” Sanchez said.
He went on to explain his reaction to that aspect of the case by saying, “I mean, you can’t do that. And if you have live rounds there, and you don’t even know it?” according to NBC News.
Special prosecutor Kari T. Morrissey told the jury that Gutierrez-Reed “was negligent, she was careless, she was thoughtless,” during the prosecution’s closing arguments. He went on to say Gutierrez-Reed was more “worried about her career” than the victims in this case, according to NBC News.
Gutierrez-Reed’s attorney, Jason Bowles pushed back by saying the prosecutors did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Gutierrez-Reed was the person responsible for bringing live rounds to the “Rust” movie set. He went on to allege Baldwin was the person responsible for the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins because he was ultimately the one who pulled the trigger. The same bullet also injured director Joel Souza.
“I submit to you what caused her death is Mr. Baldwin going off script. No one ever knew there would be a live round on set,” Bowles said. “The only act is the pointing of the weapon. Ms Gutierrez didn’t point that weapon.”
Gutierrez-Reed maintained a neutral facial expression and showed little emotion as the jury foreperson read the verdicts aloud.
She reportedly took off her necklace before a deputy took her into custody.
Why would you EVER need live rounds on a movie set? (Not counting the Security team.)
Do the blank rounds they use in movies have “bullets” attached to them for looks but don’t go downrange? Would it be obvious to Baldwin that a round was live and not a blank?
My 357 Magnum is very similar, and it is Impossible to accidentally pull the trigger and have it fire, even with the hammer cocked, it takes effort. ""
And if your pistol is loaded with with dummy rounds what will happen?
Nothing.
Why was Baldwin pointing the gun at the victim? She wasn't an actress or stand in.
Misinterpreted, not overlooked.
Someone brought live rounds onto the set.
Have they ever found out who?...............
The producers were so cheap to not buy or rent replica firearms? What did they do? Ask some friends if they had a gun they could borrow?
Regardless. These are all good liberal democrats and once the trials end they will quietly dismiss sentences and won’t spend any time beyond what it takes for the public to forget.
And if I was running the camera with a potentially load firearm wined right at me you can rest assured I would have been checking that gun twenty times myself.p and wouldn’t even stand in front of it.
They are so focused on ‘reality’, using guns that are normal for the time period.
Back when ‘The Rifleman’, starring Chuck Connors, first aired back in the 50’s, they got tons of mail from folks saying that rifle he used in the show wasn’t even invented yet...................
They will sit on sentencing till it’s old news then let her walk with probation.
As the actual shooter walks free.
Motive sets and force on force training require different safety rules.
It is obvious that they didn’t follow the proper safety protocols.
No, I don’t know who brought live ammo. Baldwin?
Baldwin is also the producer — responsible for vetting the people he hires — and he has probably worked on set with firearms enough times that he should know basic safety like checking the weapon before use.
Possibly someone on the crew, or even her....................
Hannah is the step daughter of Thell Reed, a legendary armorer and gun coach and was an assistant to him on a number of movie and TV sets. Sadly, Thell also seems to have been the source of live rounds that made their way onto the set, sloppily mixed in with dummy rounds in boxes of ammo that Thell provided.
Baldwin is set for trial in a few months. I believe that he will be convicted.
Saw a photo of the box the munition was in (Daily Mail I believe) In the box were both live rounds and rounds for the movie. Both in same box. They were playing Russian roulette and didn’t know it.
“Have they ever found out who?...............”
I would also love to know the “why”. I can’t think of one reason, offhand.... other than a pre-planned “accident”.
It was reported that some of the crew were target shooting with the gun prior to the incident on set..............
“And if I was running the camera with a potentially load firearm wined right at me you can rest assured I would have been checking that gun twenty times myself.p and wouldn’t even stand in front of it.”
They were not shooting a scene. AB was doing off-camera practicing.
“As the actual shooter walks free.”
Indicted by grand jury. Trial in a few months.
