Positioned all by herself at the free-throw line, Caitlin Clark with her foul shots made her way to the top of the NCAA Division 1 scoring board.
Her team, No. 6 Iowa, won against No. 2 Ohio State with a score of 93-83, all thanks to her two free throws on a technical penalty. Clark undoubtedly surpassed the previous 54-year-old record held by Pete Maravich.
Clark needed to score eighteen points to beat Maravich’s record of 3,667 points, which the player accumulated in a total of 83 games. She made history by gaining 3,685 points in her 130 games.
Caitlin stated: “Just to be in the same realm of all these players who have been so successful, whether it’s Pete or Kelsey Plum or Lynette Woodard — all these people have just given so much to the game,”
“Hopefully somebody comes after me and breaks my records and I can be there supporting them,” she added.
She was well-known for her 3-pointers, and after Cotie McMahon was called for giving her a slight shove during a dead ball, Caitlin was summoned at the foul line with less than a second remaining in the first half.

I got cut from my high school team and played CYO ball.
One night at the Y was a 2 time NCAAW Champion and 2 time PAC-10 player of the year.
I couldn’t believe how easily I schooled her in every facet.
I was 5’10” 150, she 6’3” I would guess 200.
In a sport where physical contact occurs, women are children.
Someone said the other day that the three-point rule was not in effect yet when Maravich set his record. Is that correct? So Caitlin would have needed fewer baskets to score the same number of points.
But she also needed nearly twice as many games.
One day her record may fall to a man who thinks he is a woman.
When Maravich played, freshman weren’t allowed to play, so all his points came in 3 years. There was no 3 point line when he played and in 83 games(3 seasons) he averaged a little over 44 points per game. They say if there was a 3 point line when he played, nobody would ever beat his record. Comparing him to Clark is like comparing apples to beans.
I used to play in a men’s no-check hockey league, and we heard about this gal who was playing on one of the teams who was reputed to be very fast and shifty with a decent shot, as good as any guy we were told.
When we played their team, she couldn’t compete. She was smaller than most of the guys, and they just played her body, and she couldn’t do anything. Even though there was no checking. She wasn’t even average.
I am all for women’s sports, and women competing against other women, as it is the spirit of competition that is the draw for most people in sports and is what is enjoyable.
But for the same reason the fastest woman has crossed a marathon finish time fifteen minutes after the fastest man has crossed it, and Special Forces are all male, fact based persons accept that women should not participate in men’s sports, and men should DEFINITELY not participate in woman’s sports.
But a lot of people just love the Hollywood versions of a 110 lb shapely woman taking on five full grown male assassins and kicking the crap out of all of them.
This is a great and legitimate accomplishment WITHIN WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL, and nothing more.
I concur on all points.
Also no shot clock. A lot of four corner passing to run clock. Many low scoring games.
Men that are prolific scorers won’t stay 4 years in college ball.
Clark, however, is the greatest women's college player ever and her range from three is only matched by Steph Curry.
Yes, the three-point FG didn’t exist when Maravich played and he only played three years in college.
OK just so you have some perspective. The smart media say she broke the MAJOR COLLEGE NCAA DIVISION I record, male and female. There is a reason they say it that way.
Here is why they say it: because two other players from coincidentally the same school have over 4000 points each.

Hutcheson and Pierce set their scoring records while Lipscomb College was a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes (NAIA).
Hutcheson was the heart of the Bisons offense during his tenure on the team from 1986-1990. He led his Bison basketball team to a career record of 139–16. Scoring double figures every game of his four-year collegiate career, Hutcheson also holds the Lipscomb single season records for points scored (1,277), field goals attempted (826), field goals made (518) and free throws attempted (339).
He currently holds the Lipscomb University career records for free throws attempted (1,176), field goals attempted (2,621), most games played (155), double-figure games (155), 2nd highest point total (4,106) and rebound total (1,112).
Hutcheson broke the existing all-time scoring mark of 4,045 points set by Travis Grant of Kentucky State in the NAIA national tournament in a third round game against Pfeiffer (NC) on March 16, 1990.
A Lipscomb Academy graduate, Hutcheson was inducted into the Lipscomb University Athletic Hall of Fame and the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1997, had his jersey number 44 retired by the school – the first in Lipscomb history.
Pierce, a teammate of Hutcheson’s, watched him do interview after interview during his red shirt season as a freshman in 1989-90. In 1990, Pierce received the nod as the player who would eventually replace the legendary Philip Hutcheson.
Pierce wasted little time at chasing his predecessor, as he netted 22 points in 21 minutes and grabbed nine rebounds in his first game in a Bison uniform. In Pierce’s time at Lipscomb (1990-1994), the Bisons compiled an overall record of 129-19, qualifying for the NAIA national tournament all four years.
On Feb. 24, 1994, the clock read 4:54 in the second half against Cumberland University. After being held to only eight points in the first half, Pierce exploded in the second half to become Lipscomb and College Basketball’s all-time scorer. After the game many of the old-timers who had seen nearly every game in Lipscomb’s McQuiddy Gym could be heard saying that never before had McQuiddy Gym erupted like the moment when Pierce laid the soft bankshot off the glass to surpass Hutcheson. Today, Hutcheson’s 4,106-career points stands as the second-highest scoring total in all of college basketball.
Scoring in double digits in every game that he played, Pierce’s 4,230 career point total still stands as the national mark for a college career.
Steph Curry’s career 3 point % is 42.6%.
Caitlin Clark’s career 3 point % is 43.8%, but she shoots a smaller ball and her 3 point line is not as distant. (22 ft.-1.75” vs., for Curry’s NBA career, 23 ft.-9”.)
Steve Kerr’s NBA career % was 45.4%, though I will grant you Curry probably shoots more balls over 25’ out than Kerr did.
If we REALLY want to talk about mad bombers, somebody ought to try to figure out who’s been best at 30 ft. or more. Hahahaha.
The distance on Clark's average 3 is 26 feet, well beyond the NBA three-point line.
Sure, Curry's better and would beat her head-to-head if they shot with the same ball. But, what Clark's ability to shoot 3s is extraordinary.
When I look at Caitlin Clark I see God Himself manifested in the form of a lady basketball player. I’m 63 and I’m not certain I will see that overall level of talent in a basketball player again in my lifetime, man or woman.
If it weren’t for the elite players, basketball would be un-watchable.
